Hi, I´m helping a friend out with a printer stuck in a "49 service error" loop.
The printer displays the message "49 service error turn off and on" as soon it boots up, and then restarts.
I´ve tried :
to look for any jammed paper - can´t see anything
to clear all print jobs
disconnect it from the wired network
remove all the cartriges and boot up without them
reset the NVRAM (with holding to the rear right corner of the touchscreen while booting up until it displays "Intializing permanent storage")
What else can I try?

HI @Andreas123321,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "49 Service Error" on HP printers typically indicates a communication error or a firmware issue. This error can be triggered by various factors, including corrupted print jobs, conflicts with the network, or issues with the printer’s firmware. You’ve already tried several troubleshooting steps which are indeed useful for addressing this error. Here are a few more steps you can try:
Update the Firmware: Even if the printer is in an error state, it might be possible to update the firmware. Visit the HP Support website, find the firmware for your specific printer model, and follow the instructions for updating it. This can often resolve the error by fixing bugs or compatibility issues in the printer's software.
Check for External Devices: If you have any external devices connected to the printer (like USB drives, or network cables), disconnect them. These devices can sometimes cause conflicts that result in a 49 error.
Perform a Factory Reset: If the NVRAM reset hasn't worked, try a full factory reset. The procedure can vary by model, but generally involves navigating the printer's menu to find a reset option, or holding down a combination of buttons during startup. Note: This will erase all settings on the printer, returning it to its default state.
Remove and Reinstall the Printer Drivers: On the connected computer(s), remove the printer from the list of devices and uninstall the printer drivers. Then, download the latest drivers from the HP website and reinstall them. This ensures that there are no corrupted drivers sending confusing data to the printer.
Check for Hardware Issues: Less commonly, the error can be caused by a hardware fault. This could involve the printer's memory, its formatter board, or other components. If you suspect a hardware issue and the printer is still under warranty, contacting HP Support for a repair or replacement might be the best course of action.
Consult the Printer’s Manual or HP Support: The printer’s manual might have specific instructions for addressing this error. Additionally, HP’s customer support can provide guidance tailored to your specific model and situation.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

If the printer does not boot when there is no network or usb cable attached after performing an NVRAM reset then the prognosis is not good and you may have a permanent formatter failure.
I am a volunteer, offering my knowledge to support fellow users, I do not work for HP nor speak for HP.

The printer does boot up, but displays the 49 service error right away, no matter what I do. Right now, its only connected to the power, no USB or network cables are attached.
To be able to factory reset (according to the manual) I need to access the settings menu - which I cant, since it displays the error right away.
I cant see anywhere on HPs website where I can download a new firmware to this printer, am I missing something?
Thanks for the advice so far!
