I replaced the magenta ink cartridge in the middle of a large print job when prompted by the printer.  The printer automatically acknowledged the change and went through a short tune up phase, following which all pages printed had severe color malfunctions.  The first page started out too purple and then the remaining pages only printed blues and yellows.  My computer even sent me a prompt offering me HP Rewards for using a real HP ink cartridge, so can you please help me understand what is the problem and how do I get the color balance back to correct levels?  I was printing on very expensive specialty paper, so this has been an expensive waste of ink as well as paper.

And fwiw, this issue arose a mere 5 minutes after I replaced the blue cartridge and managed to get 2 pages to print flawlessly after that cartridge change.

Hi! @swtx, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you have print quality issues with your printer after replacing the ink cartridge.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

Have you tried printing from a different application? Does the issue persist?

Are you using HP genuine ink cartridges to print?

Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.

As you mentioned you have print quality issues with your printer after replacing the ink cartridge.

Try the steps recommended below.

There is one setting in the driver which you can check. It's called Preserve Layout. Make sure that it is set to Yes.

You can find this setting here: Start>Devices and Printers>Your printer driver>
Right click and go to Printer Preferences>Advanced> select preserve layout

If the copy works fine try uninstalling the printer drivers from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software on your PC and check if it helps.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Select OK.

Link to install full feature printer software.

Thank you for your suggestions.  I did have to delete and reinstall the printer driver, which was curious since I had updated the driver software a mere 4 hours before this error occured.  But alas, by fully deleting the old version and starting afresh, the color balance has corrected itself.  Very strange that a mere change in ink cartridge caused all this kerfuffle.

I wanted to let you know that your first solution (the one about Preserve Layout) was not an option I could find by following your steps, so you may need to update your guidance for Windows changes.  I assumed you were referencing the Advanced option under "Printer Properties" instead of "Printer Preferences", but even so, I never could find an option to Preserve Layout.  I even tried searching Windows to no avail.

I hope this feedback is as helpful as yours was.  Thanks again!
