HP Office Jet 3831
macOS 10.15 Catalina

Hi,

I own an HP Office Jet 3831.  It was being temperamental and not always printing straight away or at all.  It was connected to the wi-fi and the strength of the signal in my study isn't great so i thought that may be the issue.  My house has wi-fo extenders because of the weak signal in some places.  Accordingly, I thought I should connect my printer to the extender which has a stronger signal.  Now the printer doesn't respond at all.  I have checked its status and it is 'on line'.  I have checked it is on the network, which it is.  When I click to print something it just says 'looking for printer'.  Help please.  I need to produce a number of documents .  Many thanks, Johnniefitz.

@Johnniefitz, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Printers connected to the extenders may not work. You need to connect it directly to a wireless network.

  • Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the MAC should be on the 2.4GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
  • Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.
  • Restart the wireless router, the printer, and the MAC

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

Try printing.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
