I have a problem with my HP office Jet 5230. It stopped printing black but I didn’t get a message to change the cartridge. I have put a new one in but keep getting a Cartridge Problem error code saying the cartridges are not communicating properly. I have tried cleaning the contacts as per a previous post I have read and tried removing the power cable for 60 seconds. Neither of these worked. If I put the old cartridge back in I don’t get the error message but nothing prints out in black. Anyone got any ideas please?

Hi @AFinn ,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It's frustrating to encounter cartridge problems, but there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet 5230. Here are suggestions:
Check Cartridge Installation:
- Ensure that the new black cartridge is correctly installed. Remove it and reseat it carefully, making sure it clicks into place.
Update Firmware:
- Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve communication issues.
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the printer. Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water. Make sure both are completely dry before reinserting the cartridge.
Perform a Power Reset:
- Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, and wait for at least 60 seconds. Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on. Check if the issue persists.
Try Another New Cartridge:
- It's possible that the new cartridge is faulty. If you have another new cartridge, try installing it to see if the problem persists.
Check for Protective Strips:
- Ensure that there are no protective strips or tapes left on the new cartridge. These strips are designed to protect the contacts during shipping but can interfere with proper communication.
Reset Printer Settings:
- Reset the printer settings to default. Navigate to the printer settings through the control panel or the printer software on your computer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.-
