Hi, I have a problem with a hp office jet pro 8600 at startup it shows the error "printer or ink system error" The Black ink cartridge is the one giving me problems. I tried two brand new cartridges and it gives me this error message. I tried resetting the printer and now I cant get past the setup part of putting in the ink cartridges. I ;have the setup cartridges, but the black ink one is empty and I can't get past this part. I have seen that some people have gotten past this issue, but the solution is sent to them in a private message. Can someone send me the procedure to fix these issues, Thanks.

Hi @Morebeer123,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're facing an ink system error with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600. Since the issue seems to be tied to the black ink cartridge and you've already tried replacing it with new ones, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this problem.
Check for Ink Cartridge Chips or Contacts:
- Ensure the new ink cartridge is properly installed and that the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer are clean. If they are dirty, gently clean them with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water.
Check the Ink Cartridges:
- Ensure that the cartridges are genuine HP products and are compatible with your printer model. Sometimes, third-party cartridges can cause issues like this.
Reset the Printer:
- Power off the printer and unplug it from the electrical outlet for 10-15 minutes. This will allow the internal memory to reset.
- After waiting, plug it back in and turn it on to see if the error persists.
Update the Printer Firmware:
- Sometimes, a firmware update can fix issues related to the ink system. You can update your printer’s firmware using the HP Support website or through the HP Smart app.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- To reset the printer to factory settings, follow these steps:
- Power off the printer.
- Press and hold the # and 6 keys on the printer’s control panel while turning the printer back on.
- Continue holding the buttons until the display shows a "Reset" message. This should clear any configurations or errors.
If you still cannot get past the setup due to the empty setup cartridge, you may need to replace the black ink cartridge before proceeding past that step.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

"I have done this and it does not solve the problem."
- Check the Ink Cartridge
- Ensure that the cartridges are genuine HP products and are compatible with your printer model. Sometimes, third-party cartridges can cause issues like this.
- "I have two new genuine HP printer inks and I still get the ink error."
Reset the Printer:
- Power off the printer and unplug it from the electrical outlet for 10-15 minutes. This will allow the internal memory to reset.
- After waiting, plug it back in and turn it on to see if the error persists.
- "I have done this process multiple times and I'm still getting the ink/printer error."
Update the Printer Firmware:
- Sometimes, a firmware update can fix issues related to the ink system. You can update your printer’s firmware using the HP Support website or through the HP Smart App.
- "I have tried this several times and it does not work. The firmware cannot be updated when the printer is in the setup mode."
- "I cannot reset the printer because it is still in the setup mode (after being reset) and the number keys do not show up."
If you still cannot get past the setup due to the empty setup cartridge, you may need to replace the black ink cartridge before proceeding past that step.
"This would be my last resort, but I'm weighing the options of buying/investing in an ink cartridge that may not solve my problem. Then I cannot return it for my money back."
