OfficeJet 3831 (Model K7V45B) Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My OfficeJet 3831 (Model K7V45B) printer connected via WiFi will print everything in black and white. It will not give me the option to print in colour.  The option in Paper/Quality printing properties (preferences) to CHOOSE between Black and White or Colour - is entirely missing. It will only print colour documents – in black and white.

The laptop is an HP 250 G6.  I have the latest Windows 10  Version 1909 installed (OS build 18363.535). All the following checks I have made tell me I have the correct up-to-date drivers: within HP Support Assistant (no new updates); Windows Security Updates (all up to date). The Printer Settings troubleshooter found nothing incorrect. I have run HP Print and Scan doctor (version 5.3). The Windows Printer Test Page describes “Print Driver properties: Driver Name HP OfficeJet 3830 series; Driver Type: Type 3 – User Mode; Driver Version 20.79.1.6594”. I have spent weeks now trying to find a solution.

The internet and HP Community is littered with HP printers in Windows 10 not having this option to print in colour. I have looked at them all. 100’s of complicated ‘solutions’ cannot consistently solve the problem. [Please do not add your own questions to this post if you have a printer DIFFERENT to the OfficeJet 3831 Model K7V45B printer; it only confuses matters, thank you]

Is it HP’s latest drivers OR Windows Built-In Drivers which has the correct driver to overcome the ‘no colour option available’? Is it a driver problem at all? Or is the problem because the printer is WIFI connected – the situation is so very confusing?)

Please:  is there a simple definitive solution to this? I will happily mark as “Solved” when a solution is found. Thank you.

@AF7

Very simple given you already installed printer software and drivers to your computer. Normally from application for example MS Word

(a) Click Print,

(b) Click Printer properties,

(c) Select Grayscale Off

(d) Click Ok then Print

You can set it as default.

Regards.

Thank you, BH.  But this is exactly the point.  Clicking Print / Print Properties from any application - there is just no option (under the usual Paper/ Quality Tab, or anywhere else) to select Grayscale (Black and White) or Colour (as there is e.g. using the same printer under Windows 7). Where we'd expect to see it, it just asks what Quality (Draft, Normal, Best) etc.  The usual Grayscale or Colour alternative is entirely missing; hence it is not possible to set any default.

To illustrate my issue I copied this image from another post to show the problem  I - and so many - are having with HP Printers on Windows 10. I hope this helps understand our issue.
