HP OfficeJet 4655
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

I tried to replace the ink cartridges on my recently-purchased HP OfficeJet 4655 with the HP 63XL cartridges, which are made specifically for this printer.  I get an error message:  The indicated cartridges are not intended for use in this printer.  Hmm, who has time for this nonsense?  I've removed them, made sure everything is clean (it was), reinserted, and still the same message.  I believe I am done with HP.

Hi @runnerwannabe,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. As I understand you are having issues with the ink cartridges not working on your HP OfficeJet printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Which country do you reside in and was the printer purchased from the same country?

Have you tried to change the ink cartridges on your printer prior to the error?

Have you tried to clean the ink cartridge contacts as well as the rollers?

In the meantime let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Please follow all the steps suggested in the support document for -  HP Printers - 'Incompatible Ink Cartridge' or 'Ink Cartridges Missing' Error Displays

Alternatively, you can try to use an older cartridge or use another compatible cartridge and check if that helps.

Please respond to this post with the details and with the results of the troubleshooting for further assistance.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

Hi, Jeet -

I do appreciate your response - thank you for trying to help.  To answer a few of your questions, I reside in the United States and did try to clean the ink cartridge contacts as well as the rollers.  I was able to put the old ink cartridge back in the printer without getting the same error message.  In the end, the problem was resolved by taking the new HP cartidges back to Costco, who graciously allowed us to trade them in for a new set of the exact same 63XL cartridges which did work.

What did I learn from this experience?  I should never have to waste so much time and money replacing cartridges, especially since I buy the genuine HP cartridges.  The trouble seemed to be with the cartridges themselves, not the printer.  I do not print a significant number of pages on a regular basis, so I chose to go with a reasonably priced HP and chose to buy the genuine HP cartridges, but even one bad experience like this is enought to convince me to pay a little more for a more dependable product.
