So due to working from home, I have been doing a lot more printing. Today, in between 2 queued print jobs, the black ink stopped working. The second document came out looking smudged or fuzzy, like it was out of alignment. I ran a Print quality diagnostic which suggested a clean cartridge program, which I ran. After the clean cartridge program, I have been getting a cartridge problem error that I cannot clear. I have looked up HP help articles and done a handful of rests as well as a return to factory reset. I have tried the same black cartridge and a new one. Both are remanufactured cartridges, but I have been printing with this brand most of the year and this cartridge in particular for over a month.
What do I try next short of replacing the whole printer?
Thanks!

@CaitlinB3, Welcome to HP Support Community!
Update the printer firmware-
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
The third-party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which are refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it is not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.
I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!
