Microsoft Windows 11

My printer ran out of yellow 933XL ink. I installed new 933(not xl) cartridge and got a print system error. If I revert and install the 933XL, the error disappears.

I went and exchanged at Office Depot the new933 for a different set of 933 color cartridges. Installed them and the problem persists.

I then proceeded to replace all three color cartridges with 933 only leaving the black ink as 933xl. Still problem persists.

Last thing I did was revert to install old 933xl cartridges and the error disappears.

Please help me find a solution.

Hi @kschmelz156,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how frustrating it is when your HP OfficeJet 6700 Premium printer shows a “Print System Error” after installing HP 933 standard cartridges, even though the 933XL cartridges work fine.

Your printer is designed to work with both HP 933 and HP 933XL cartridges. However, in rare cases, especially with older firmware or certain cartridge batches, the printer may reject standard 933 cartridges due to:

  • Firmware incompatibility
  • Cartridge chip recognition failure
  • Cartridge protection settings

Steps to Resolve the Issue

1. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware may not recognize newer cartridge batches.

👉 HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One Printer series - H711 | HP® Support

  • Download and install the latest firmware.
  • Restart the printer and try installing the 933 cartridges again.

2. Reset the Printer

A hard reset can clear internal errors.

Steps:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  5. Turn the printer back on.

3. Clean Cartridge Contacts

Sometimes the printer fails to read the cartridge chip due to dust or residue.

Steps:

  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.
  • Let it dry and reinstall.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
