HP OfficeJet 8022
Initially had a printer error associated with a cartridge issue (can’t remember the code, but it started with 71). The only thing I could find was that the ink was low and needed replacement cartridges. However, the cartridge carrier (print head?) would move back and forth as it is supposed to when turned on, but it wouldn’t stop in the center long enough for me to replace the cartridges. It would “dock” on the right side and stay there. I tried to follow instructions on HP support forum based on similar complaints. I was able to unplug the printer when the the carrier stopped in the center so that I could “trap” it long enough to remove the cartridges. I decided to try restarting it while the carrier was empty based on instructions from the forum. Now, the carrier/print head will not move at all from the right side of the printer, so I am unable to install the new ink cartridges. I have tried everything - hard reset, etc. and nothing works. The printer error message I am getting is that the cartridges need to be replaced. But no error message such as “carriage jam” has ever popped up. Please help!
Printer is out of warranty as of 4/2022.

Hi @alo726,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the carriage on your HP OfficeJet 8022 printer is stuck on the right side, there are a few things you can try to resolve the issue.
- Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about 60 seconds. Then, plug the printer back in and turn it on to see if the carriage moves to the left.
- Check for Jammed Paper or Objects: The carriage may be stuck due to paper or objects obstructing its movement. Check for any jammed paper or foreign objects in the printer, and remove them carefully.
- Clean the Carriage Path: If the carriage is still stuck, try cleaning the carriage path. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any dust or debris that may be blocking the path.
- Reset the Printer: Reset the printer to its default settings by accessing the printer's menu and selecting "Restore Factory Defaults." This can help resolve any software issues that may be causing the carriage to stick.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
