Whenever I try printing, I get the error "one or more cartridges are missing or damaged".

I just recently ran out of 2 of the color ink cartridges. I do not wish to print in color and would like to use black ink only. Can you believe I only printed 2 color pages using those 3 cartridges and they're now empty?! That's $100. I read somewhere else that some HP printers may be designed to require color cartridges, and also use some color ink for black & white printing?! If this is the case, some HP employee please confirm. If this is the case, I am outraged and appalled and will never purchase another HP printer again.

Hi @joerpaul

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

HP OfficeJet 8702 All-in-One Printer series is designed in such a way that it requires all the four ink cartridges to be present in the printer and to have minimum amount of ink to print either in black or color. This is to balance the use of the ink from all the four ink cartridges and to provide a better print quality.

If you are trying to print in black, make sure none of the ink cartridges are low/empty.

Thankfully there are reasonably priced alternatives from third-party manufacturers.

You may refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems. HP will not guarantee the functionality of those ink cartridges.

QualityLogic, one of the world's foremost quality assurance organizations, tested the performance of HP inkjet print cartridges vs. remanufactured (refilled) brands. The results: original HP inkjet print cartridges far surpassed ink refills in both print quality and reliability.

Nearly one out of every six refilled ink cartridges tested was dead on arrival or failed prematurely 70% of refilled cartridges had some form of reliability problem Count on HP original ink cartridges for consistent, worry-free printing.

You may think you're saving money on remanufactured or refilled ink cartridges, but in the long run, the cost of wasted time, ink, and paper can more than make up the difference.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
