I installed a non-HP chipped Black ink cartridge and it is now blocking my useage for printing. I've tried updating the firmware, turning "Cartridge Protection" off, and every other suggested fix I could find on the internet. The display continues to display an error of "Non-HP Chip Dectected" and prevents me from printing.

Hi @DannyG7,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is enforcing its cartridge protection feature, which often blocks the use of non-HP cartridges. Since you’ve already tried updating the firmware and turning off "Cartridge Protection," here are a few more steps you could try.
Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure you have the latest firmware. Sometimes, even if you’ve updated, checking again can help as there might be recent updates.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- This can sometimes clear temporary errors.
Reinstall the Cartridges:
- Remove the non-HP cartridge and reinsert it, making sure it is seated properly.
- Sometimes removing and reinserting can help the printer recognize the cartridge correctly.
Try an Original HP Cartridge: If possible, temporarily replace the non-HP cartridge with an original HP one to see if the printer will then allow you to print. This can help confirm if the issue is with the non-HP cartridge.
Factory Reset:
- Perform a factory reset on the printer. This can be found in the printer’s settings menu. Note that this will reset all settings to default, so you’ll need to reconfigure your printer settings afterward.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Alden4, thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I tried all of those strategies, except a factory reset. I had been without the ability to print for 2 days (which is not feasible in my business), so I had to buy an OEM cartridge...which, of course, it worked like a charm. I think we all know what HP is doing here...it's just something that will affect future decisions when buying equipment for my business.

Hi @DannyG7,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I see that you have an issue using non-HP ink cartridges on your printer.
A) Please follow the steps below to fix the issue.
1) Take out the cartridges
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges
B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.
C) If the issue still persists, refer to this link for more information related to using non-HP ink cartridges.
If you are using generic or Non HP ink cartridges and the above steps do not help. You will have to contact the generic ink cartridge manufacturer to assist you further with it or you will have to use genuine HP ink cartridges to resume printing.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!
