Hello! I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 we are using wirelessly. We recently started having a problem where we find the printer in an unresponsive state.  The screen is blank and the lights are all flashing.  We observe no error messages other than on the client side where we find the printer offline.  It looks like this:

Our temporary workaround is to press and hold the power button or unplug the machine and then it will come online again for a while.  Then it will revert to, what is now its normal, unresponsive state.

What's wrong and how do we fix this?

Here's an update on this.  I discovered that, a few minutes after restarting the printer, an error code came up on the display while flashing all the lights like in the attached video: B30011B0.  Perhaps it shows that message prior to the screen going blank.

Hi @faireskind,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you are encountering a blank screen and flashing lights on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020, it could be an indication of a hardware malfunction or an error message that the printer is trying to convey. Here are a few steps that you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Power cycle the printer: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Check the ink cartridges: Make sure that the ink cartridges are correctly installed and have sufficient ink levels. If they are running low, replace them with new ones.
  • Reset the printer: Press and hold the "Cancel" and "Wireless" buttons simultaneously for about five seconds until the printer restarts.
  • Check for error messages: Look for any error messages on the printer's display screen or on your computer screen. Follow the instructions to resolve the issue.
  • Update the firmware: Check for any firmware updates on the HP website and install them if available.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I tried following your instructions as best I could.

  1. I power-cycled the printer according to your instructions. Of course, I had to first press and hold the power button to get the printer to restart so I could shut it down as you instructed.
  2. I checked the ink cartridges. I opened the printer bay and reseated each of them. I also reviewed the printer status report (which printed just fine) which showed that the cartridges had ink - not full, but sufficient.
  3. You said to Press and hold the "Cancel" and "Wireless" buttons to reset the printer. I don't see those buttons on this printer model. Perhaps you could tell me where to find these so I can follow the instruction.
  4. When the printer is actively working, there is no error message shown on the screen. As I described in my original post, it's only after the printer sits idle for a few minutes that the screen goes white and the lights flash.
  5. I checked for a firmware update. The last one came out in October and it has already been applied.
  6. I logged in to view the printer's event log. I found two information-level events from Apr 21,22 with a code of 17.01.60. Prior to that, on Mar 26, there were two warnings: 31.13.01 and 31.13.02 which I believe to be scanner jams.

So far, the printer still works as long as we power-cycle it and use it immediately thereafter before the screen turns white and the lights flash. We're wondering when it's going to finally stop working altogether.

I was facing the same issue.

I have, repeatedly, disconnected the power cord and plugged it in again; that is how we can get it to print when we need it.  Not every time, but there have been several, I have waited a minute or more to plug the printer back in and power it back up.

Hi @faireskind,

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 printer has a blank screen and the lights are flashing, there are a few things you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check the power source: Make sure the printer is plugged into a working electrical outlet and that the outlet is not controlled by a switch.
  • Restart the printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Check for jammed paper: Open the printer cover and check if there is any jammed paper. If there is, carefully remove it and try printing again.
  • Reset the printer: Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to reset the printer.
  • Check the ink cartridges: Make sure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and not empty. If they are low or empty, replace them with new cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Alden4, I'm not sure if you noticed, but you already posted a solution before with many of the same points. I have tried all of these and none of them work.
