Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer worked fine yesterday.  Today I went to print and  . . . nothing.  The printer makes all the warming up noises, but the queue empties and nothing prints.  I unplugged the printer, uninstalled all the software that started with HP, then plugged the printer back in and reinstalled all the software. Same problem.  I switched to wireless rather than USB.  Same problem.  I have a Dell Windows 10 (64-bit) desktop computer running version 1903.

I also tried running the troubleshooter - no problem found.  I tried the Print and Scan Doctor which identifies a driver conflict then provides no information about how to fix that issue.  I tried the AI help on the HP Support page.  The AI asked what printer I have.  I typed my printer series, then chose it from the pop-up menu, then clicked Select.  The AI whirred a bit, and then again asked what printer I had.  Honestly?

I give up - ready to throw the printer out the window, or slap some executive at HP (maybe the one who signed off on the AI).

Any ideas?

Hi @SLP42,

I'd like to help!

 Let's try and uninstall the printer software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.

--->In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

--->Select your HP printer.

--->Select Uninstall.

--->In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

--->In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

--->Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

--->Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

--->Click on the Drivers tab.

--->Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

--->Select OK.

--->Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

--->Close Devices and Printers.

And then reinstall the printer full-featured drivers from software and drivers page

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you.  The one thing I had not already done was to delete the drivers found in printui.exe /s.  I did go there and was able to delete both the drivers and the packages for all but one of the HP listings - the one for the printer I currently own.  When I try to delete the driver and package, I get an error saying

The following package(s) can not be deleted:

hpygid29_v4.inf (x64)
This package contains the following driver(s) that are in use:
HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series PCL-3; This driver is used on:
Scan Only -HP489A4A (HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series)-DO NOT DELETE

The following driver(s) can not be deleted:

Driver HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series PCL-3 (x64) is in use. It is used on:
Scan Only -HP489A4A (HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series)-DO NOT DELETE

I never used the scan feature on this printer as I have a better (Epson) scanner, and I don't recall ever setting up the software for the HP scanner.  When I try to delete just the driver, I get the bottom message that the driver is in use.

My computer is 6 years old so I actually ordered a new computer (not an HP!).  I teach online and would like to be able to use a virtual background, which my computer is too old (or at least has insufficient graphics capability) to do.

The printer works fine on my husband's computer which is only a year old.  I'm guessing there was something in the recent Windows update that changed the communication between my computer and the printer.

I do appreciate your help, but I think with a new computer I'll be fine.

use the Windows Add a Printer wizard to install the built-in print driver.

Install the built-in print driver over a network connection with Windows 10 or Windows 8.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

  2. Click Devices and Printers, and then click Add a printer.

    Clicking Add a printer

  3. On the Choose a device or printer to add to this PC window, select your printer, click Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver. If your printer is not in the list, continue with these steps.

    Example of printers found in the Choose a device or printer to this PC window

  4. Click The printer I want isn't listed, and then select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.

    Selecting Add a printer using local or network printer with manual settings

  5. Click Next.

  6. Select the port to be used by your printer, such as USB001 for a USB connected printer, and then click Next.

  7. Click Windows Update, and then wait for the print drivers to update.

  8. Click HP, Hewlett-Packard, or Hewlett Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.

    • If your printer is in the list, select it, click Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.

    • If your printer is not in the list, click the back arrow in the upper left corner of the window two times to return to the Find a printer by other options step, and then continue with these steps.

  9. Select Add a printer using TCP/IP address or hostname, and then click Next.

    Selecting Add a printer using TCP/IP address or hostname

  10. Select Autodetect from the Device type drop-down list.

  11. Type your printer IP address into the text box, and then click Next.

    To find the printer IP address, print a Wireless Network Test report or a Network Configuration page.

  12. Wait for the computer to connect to the printer, and then click Next to install the print driver.

Let me know!
