HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 All-in One Printing Intermittently

This is a request for additional assistance from the HP, Apple, and AT&T Community Forums

Wireless Router Range Extender: Linksys RE6500

Multi-point unresolved printing issue:

HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 had printed successfully from all of the three above noted computers since 4/4/2015 purchase. In late August 2016 it began to intermittently refuse to print wirelessly, sometimes not establishing a wireless connection or hold one from job to job.

On 9/6/16 I posted the issue to the HP Community Forum and between 9/7/16 and 9/8/16 had dialogue about possible solutions. I followed the advice received and performed the following recommended tasks – all to no avail:

1) Sequential powering down and power cord removal of Router, Range Extender, OfficeJet Pro 8610, and iMac and after 60 seconds powering the devices up in same order. Result: Would not Print.

2) Turned off Wireless at iMac. Connected iMac to Printer via Ethernet Cable. Printer would not print.

3) Tried to Scan Wireless from Printer to iMac: Would not Scan.

4) Tried Scan via Ethernet Cable from Printer to iMac: Scan worked.

5) Connected iMac via Ethernet Cable to Router and Reset Printing system from iMac to remove Printer and then added Printer as per it’s name: HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 [455491]. Results were mixed:

a) Wireless from iMac to Router and Ethernet cable from router to Printer: test page printed.

b) Wireless from iMac to Router and from Router to Printer: test page would not print.

On 9/8/16, with nothing further advised by HP community Forum, I contacted AT&T, the provider of my Router and all of my related services (Wireless, Broadband, Internet, Landline) for Support service.

AT&T recommended:

1) Doing a new setup of Wireless at the HP Printer itself using my Wireless secure network name and password and then performing a Router reboot. Between the two actions (new Set Up and Router reboot), the Printer started up and printed a previously submitted test page. To confirm that the Printer was in fact working, I shut off the Printer, waited, turned it back on and tried to print the Test page: the page would not Print.

2) AT&T then told me to do a new manual Set Up from the Printer. Just as I touched Set Up on the Printer display, the Printer printed the Test Page.

AT&T told me the Printer should be working fine now.

Once I shut my system down and restarted it on 9/9/16, I found that I could not print in any manner:

Wireless to Router to Printer

Wireless to Router and Ethernet Cable to Printer

Ethernet Cable to Router and Wireless to Printer

Ethernet Cable to Printer

Further experimentation on 9/11/16 has led to erratic printing dependent upon the machine of origin:

1.  iMac to HP Printer: Wireless iMac to Printer yields not the Test Page sent for printing, but a series of blank pages, followed by several pages of code, and followed by more blank pages. The Code pages all begin the same and then mention the Cambria (Body) font.

a.  The first pages all state: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 %APL_DCS_Encodiong: UFT8 %APLProducer: (Version 10.11.6 (Build 15G1

b.  The second page beings with: 14 dict begin/FontName / TJOLUV+Cambria def

The second page on three subsequent printing attempts reads the same as above, save for a different set of letters in advance of “+Cambria”. One is UAXKPA, one is JJCFBS, and the third is WOKHHG.

2.  Yet, when I tried to print the Test Page Wirelessly from both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, the printing is successful (i.e., the test page prints and the blank and coded pages do not print.

I am sorely in need of a remedy for this overall situation.

  • What is causing the HP Printer to print intermittently?
  • What is causing Wireless and Ethernet printing to vary?
  • What is causing the iMac to print blank and code pages when the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro both will print “regular” pages?
  • Is the issue one where a new Router is required?
  • Doe the issue indicate the need to uninstall the Printer and then do a re-install?
  • With all machine software updates current could there be cross machine software issues?

Two things that you can try.

Current firmware on 8610 is 1547A, what is yours?

Connect the 8610 to any ethernet plug, router or extender.

Thank you, 8lives, for your reply.

Re: Your question "Current firmware on 8610 is 1547A, what is yours?"

I have no idea what the firmware on my 8610 is. How can I locate that information?

Re: Your suggestion to "Connect the 8610 to any ethernet plug, router or extender".

As noted in my inquiry, I had tried printing via Ethernet cable from iMac to HP 8610, from iMac to Router (and Wireless from Router to Printer), and by way of iMac Wireless tp Router and then Ethernet cable to Printer all with the result same result - no printing.

Please advise how to locate Firmware version and I will send that information to you.

You will find the firmware rel. on the printer status report which is selected thru the printer screen.

You mentioned Ethernet to printer might the be USB to printer?

Printer Firmware Version: FDP1CN1432AR

Connection method alternate to Wireless used for testing has been Ethernet cable (Patch Cord), not USB.

Thanks, 8lives!  You solved the problem!

Updating the firmware as you recommended did the trick.  After doing so, I reset the printer information on each of our  three Mac computers.  Combined, this took care of the printing failure issue.  To be sure, I did test page printing from each of the three computers, shut down the printer, after a minute restarted it, and repeated the test page printing from each computer - they all worked without an issue.

A lesson for me is to check for Firmware updates from time to time, something I have not done as I was under the impression that my iMac included all of the printer's software when it did automatic software updater searches for the iMac.

I appreciate your guidance.

Guess I'll have to use my full first name vs. my nickname in the future so I don't get a "bleep" in its place.  Sorry.

Glad that the firmware fixed the problem.
