Dear E_c,
As the printer has not worked with two different black cartridges, I have a strong feeling that the issue may be with the printer itself. After checking the warranty of your printer from the serial number provided, it seems the warranty is expired. My guess from the situation you are in is that the copper contacts inside of the printer, where the cartridge is inserted have an issue. This can occur after having the printer for many years, as after replacing the cartridge many times, the contacts can be worn down or damaged. I would suggest either attempting to clean the contacts in the printer, or to purchase a new printer. The contacts should be visible when no cartridge is inserted inside of the printer. When cleaning them, be sure to have the printer unplugged. The contacts are very fragile, so if you decide to clean them, then be sure to be very careful not to damage them further.
Have a nice day!

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve black not printing on your Officejet 4620.
If the standard troubleshooting did not resolve black not printing I would suggest removing the black cartridge. Turn it over and examine the area around the ink port. There are four orange plastic spots, left over from the protective cap. Make sure these are flush with the cartridge body, if not carefully trim them flush. If the plastic nubs protrude they can prevent the cartridge from seating properly. Before replacing the cartridge in the printer dribble a few (maybe four) drops of hot water into the ink port in the printer and two drops into the ink port on the cartridge then snap the cartridge back in position.
It may also help to manually clean the printhead as described in the post here.
I have also seen cases where leaving the printer overnight after the cleaning cycles allows black to recover.
If none of the above restores black printing your printer will likely require repair or replacement.

bob,
thanks for that suggestion.
i did try it and it did not solve the problem.
i've already ordered a new HP printer.
this one last 9 or 10 yrs so i got my monies worthy.
hopefully, the new one will last just as long if not longer.
