Starting a couple days ago, my printer won’t print red. I tried to replace the cartridges, but it still won’t make red. I’m sure that my printer is out of warranty, since I bought it a long time ago. Is there any way to fix it?

Hi @Andrew3833,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing a print quality issue with your HP Officejet 4635 won’t print red. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

To assist better:

  • Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges?
  • Does the copy print out the same way?
  • What's the application you are trying to print from?
  • Have you tried printing from a different application or device?

While you respond to that, let's print a Print Quality Diagnostic page -Post the Print Quality Diagnostic page here so we can help you further.

Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove the USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till the warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware

One possible cause is that the red ink cartridge is empty, clogged, or defective. You said you tried to replace the cartridges, but did you use genuine HP ink cartridges? Sometimes, using non-HP or refilled cartridges can cause print quality problems or damage the printer. To check the ink levels and cartridge status, you can use the printer’s control panel or the HP Printer Assistant software on your computer. If the red ink cartridge is low, empty, or has an error message, you should replace it with a new one.

Another possible cause is that the printhead is dirty or misaligned. The printhead is the part of the printer that sprays ink onto the paper. If it is clogged with dried ink or dust, or if it is not aligned properly, it can affect print quality and color accuracy. To clean and align the printhead, you can use the printer’s control panel or the HP Printer Assistant software on your computer.

A third possible cause is that the printer settings are incorrect or incompatible with the paper type or size. For example, if you are printing on photo paper, but the printer is set to plain paper, it can affect the color output. You can use the printer’s control panel or the HP Printer Assistant software on your computer to check and change the printer settings. Make sure that the paper type and size match what you are using, and that the print quality is set to normal or high. You can also try to print a test page or a diagnostic report to see if the problem persists.
