I am having the same error message as a number of others on this forum re: error message suddenly appears saying that the printhead is missing or failed. I have followed all of HP's suggested steps, i.e., unplugging, checking ink cartridges, etc. None of them did anything to correct or get past the same issue. My printer is nearly 2 years old, so out of warranty.  there's no explanation for cleaning print heads on the 6700 and other products don't translate to the 6700.  I looked at about 1/4 of the blog, some at the beginning and some at the end, and won't waste my time looking at all 12 pages of unhappy customers.

And I just purchased and installed new print cartridges that are not cheap.  What a waste....

Please let me know what else I can do that would be significantly less dollars than buying a new printer, because it surely won't be an HP.   This has been a known problem for years and still HP hasn't chosen to solve it.  they'd rather you buy another throw-away HP.  Good luck!

@SamZilch,

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post serial numbers and case details.

Thank you,

I received a call, which I missed on Monday, re this  incident.  The HP person said they'd call yesterday, which they didn't do, nor did they leave a callback number, so this is the only way I can respond.  Pls call me on my cell phone or leave a number I can reach you at.  Thank you.  Dan

THIS IS A MUST READ!! COSTCO ROCKS! I bought my HP 6700 just less than 3 years ago after another HP printer exploded ink all over the inside and stopped working on me. (Which I thought was my fault. Now I'm not so sure.) About a week ago, I started getting the error message "missing or failed print head". I tried everything it suggested, and got it to make a couple more copies before it refused to make any more. I got online hoping to find a solution and discovered this forum and all the people vowing never to buy another HP product because of this obvious "planned obsolescence". I had only replaced the ink cartridges twice, which showed how little I used it, but I'd had it for 3 YEARS so I thought I was screwed!  I was mad at HP and wanted to let COSTCO  know that they should stop selling their crap. I called COSTCO and spoke to a young lady and asked if they had had many returns on this model. She asked her supervisor, and he said a couple, but not anything unusual. I told her about this  forum, and how they probably hadn't heard anything because most failed right after the warranty ended! She said "Well bring it back!". I said "What?". She said "Bring it back!". I managed to choke out "But, but, the warranty was up TWO YEARS AGO!" She said "We don't worry about the manufacturer's warranty. We want our customers to be happy with everything they purchase at COSTCO!". It was as simple as that.

Let me repeat. COSTCO ROCKS!

Now, if everyone that bought this printer at COSTCO takes it back when (not if) it breaks, even long after the warranty is up, and COSTCO sends them all back to HP, maybe HP will start to worry that pissing off COSTCO is a bad idea. And then maybe the poor folks that bought their printer elsewhere will start to get some appropriate response to their complaints!! Hopefully this post doesn't get flagged and deleted for inappropriate language. I tried to keep it PG. 🙂

I too recieved the same error.  My warrantee is expired, therefore, when I called HP support they offered to replace it with a used OfficeJet 8610 for what I see as list price ($129.00), but also include cartidges.  Since I bought all new cartridges for the 6700 in debugging the problem, I am still $$ disadvantaged.  Also, the 8610 replacement they offered is now discontinued.  Agent stated it was not, however, as we navigated to the hp.com page, it confirmed the discontinued status.  I explained I wanted to research a little before making a decision.  I have been an exclusive  HP printer user for more than 25 years, but this last incident got me looking at Consumer reports and online reviews.  When I had the 6700 I only printed about 20 pages per/month, therefore, not a lot of wear on the printer.   For $95 I decided to go with the Cannon PIXMA MX922.  Another draw to the printer is the ability to source quality 3rd party print cartidges.  -OE
