Hi @MyPrinter27,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Encountering a message about altered or cloned cartridges in the HP Smart app can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to try to resolve the issue. Here's a guide to help you troubleshoot.
Use Genuine HP Cartridges:
- Ensure that you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Using third-party or refilled cartridges might trigger this error.
Check Cartridge Authenticity:
- Verify that the cartridges you are using are authentic HP cartridges. You can do this by checking the security label on the cartridge packaging.
Update Firmware:
- Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. HP periodically releases updates that may include fixes for cartridge-related issues.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 60 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the printer and clear error messages.
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door. Remove the cartridges and gently clean the contacts on both the cartridges and the printer using a lint-free cloth.
Reinstall Cartridges:
- After cleaning the contacts, reinstall the cartridges securely into their respective slots.
Run Print Quality Diagnostics:
- Use the printer's built-in tools to run a print quality diagnostic. This can often identify and resolve issues related to cartridges.
Remember that using non-genuine or refilled cartridges can sometimes lead to compatibility issues and errors. It's generally recommended to use genuine HP cartridges to ensure optimal performance and avoid such problems.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,
I saw that HP released updates for printers to allow non-HP cartridges:
- HP printers with dynamic security that can be disabled: HP OfficeJet 6810, 6820, OfficeJet Pro 6230, 6830, 8610, 8620, 8630, 8640, 8660, X451dn/dw, X476dn/dw, X551dw, and X576dw printers.
- HP printers with dynamic security that can be disabled depending on the date of manufacture: HP Officejet Pro 6970, 7740, 8210, 8700, Officejet 6950, PageWide 300, 400, and 500 printers. The key is the manufacturing date. If the printer was manufactured before Dec. 1, 2016, dynamic security can be disabled via a firmware update. If the printer was manufactured after that date, however, dynamic security can not be disabled.
Unfortunately, I do not see the HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g in the list. I am using windows 11 with HP Smart and it will not allow use of third party cartridges. The cartridges used to work until an update that has disabled them. Is there software or a solution you can provide that will allow the use of the 3rd party cartridges? I know they work with the printer, the update has disabled them.
Thank you.
