one of my cartridges ran empty. I replaced with an official HP 951 cartridge. error message now shows "problem with printer or ink system". I have tried the following multiple times with no success:
powered off, unplugged from back of machine & wall
removed cartridges
removed & inspected cartridge well for damaged pins or ink residue- none found
Cannot get error message to clear or screen to advance to any other screen

I understand that you are having issues with the Ink System Failure.
Try updating the firmware. Click here
If you have performed all the steps mentioned in this document and still having issues, either the cartridges are faulty or the printer ink system itself.
