I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer. It needed a cartridge change. I changed the black ink cartridge and after I did, I got the following error message: "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP."
I contacted HP and tried all of the solutions the virtual assistant had, nothing worked. Has anybody encountered this problem?

Hi @jerryc618,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue the "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" error message on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus can be quite frustrating. This issue can arise due to various reasons such as firmware glitches, cartridge problems, or hardware faults.
Here are several steps you can try to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:
1. Power Cycle the Printer
- Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and then to the printer.
- Turn the printer back on.
2. Check the Ink Cartridges
- Ensure that the ink cartridges are properly installed. Remove and reinsert them to make sure they are seated correctly.
- Check for any protective tape on the new cartridge that might not have been removed.
- Clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridges and the corresponding contacts in the printer using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
3. Perform a Hard Reset
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and then reconnect it to the printer.
- Turn the printer back on.
4. Update Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure that the printer firmware is up to date. You can check for firmware updates on the HP website or use the HP Smart app to update the firmware.
5. Clean the Printhead
- If the error persists, try cleaning the printhead.
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Setup menu, then select Maintenance, and choose Clean Printhead.
6. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Setup menu, then select Tools, and choose Restore Factory Defaults. This will reset the printer settings, which might help resolve the issue.
7. Check for Hardware Issues
- Inspect the printer for any visible damage or foreign objects inside the printer that might be causing the issue.
8. Use Genuine HP Cartridges
- Ensure that you are using genuine HP cartridges. Non-HP cartridges or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause issues.
