HP Officejet Pro 8615
Ubuntu LTS

Hi there,

i am looking for help regarding my HP Officejet Pro 8615.

I recently changed the ink cartridge for a new one - since then the printer does not work anymore and signals an Error in the LCD screen like "Printer or Ink System failure".
I already read a lot, it seems like lots of these series printers have this issue.
For me, this failure seems like a "programmed-in death", a pre-programmed printer dying after a number of printed pages or years.
I already tried to unmount and remount the printing head and to do a "semi-full reset". These options did not work.
When I boot the printer into manufacturing mode (long press to the power-on button, then Home - Return - Home - Home and then press MFG on the display), the printer shows up with an other name to the PC. In this status, printing works well.

This is the proof that there is definitely no hardware fault!
Has someone another idea of how I can get rid of this stupid error message?

Best regards,
Chris

@slicht_3, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it can be to encounter an "Ink System Failure" error right after replacing cartridges. You've already done some great troubleshooting steps, including reseating the printhead and performing a semi-full reset.

Since you've confirmed that the printer works in Manufacturing Mode, this strongly suggests that the hardware is functional and the issue is likely firmware or sensor-related. Let's go through a few more steps to try and resolve this:

Basic Reset

Sometimes a simple reset can clear temporary errors:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall and then into the printer.
  • Turn the printer on.

Check Ink Cartridge Vents

Improper venting can trigger ink system errors:

  • Remove all cartridges.
  • Inspect the vent area (small slit on top of the cartridge).
  • Use a pin to gently clear any adhesive or debris.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their color-coded slots.

Try a Different Set of Cartridges

If you're using non-HP or refilled cartridges, try replacing them with genuine HP 950/951 or 950XL/951XL cartridges. Faulty or incompatible cartridges can trigger this error.

Firmware Update (if accessible)

If the printer is accessible via USB or network in normal mode, check for a firmware update:

  • Go to Official HP® Support
  • Enter your printer model: HP Officejet Pro 8615
  • Download and install the latest firmware (if available).

If none of the above resolves the issue, the printhead may be failing or the printer's internal sensors may be corrupted. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
