Sorry didn't notice that I'd gotten a response...  I'd done all the requested options as requested... In fact ran several cycles of trying to clean the print head... at the time, the only cartridge that needed replacement was the black... now I need to replace all the other colors... drained the cartridges trying to clean the print head...  Oh and in addition, located in the US/South Florida...

and as mentioned initially, the printer is out of warranty... see below...

Hi @WhoMe190,

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums! Smiley Happy I see since upgrading to the Mac 10.10 your HP Photosmart will not print black ink. I would like you to go ahead and continue troubleshooting here:

First, let's test the hardware.  I would like to make a black copy from the front panel of the printer, does this copy successfully? If you are not able to make a copy then we know it is the printers hardware, although you are able to print in black ink from the Dell, this is a composite black meaning it pulls from all other cartridges to produce the black color.

Make sure you have not missed any steps here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, I understand you may have done some of these steps already but I need you to complete all steps in order to resolve the missing black issue you are experiencing.

Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.

If no luck, leave me with your Country/Region you are in as well as the product Warranty status: HP Warranty Checker

If you ARE able to make a black copy, please continue with the steps listed below:

Scrub/ Uninstall

• Open the Applications folder > HP or Hewlett Packard folder > HP Uninstaller
• Click continue, click on one of the printers in the list.
* Only do this step if you do not have any other HP Printers. Hold down Control, Option and Command, While holding the three buttons down,
• Click uninstall.

Reset Printing System

1. Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click System Preferences.

2. In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan  dialog box opens.

3. Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…

4. Click OK to confirm the reset.

5. Type the correct Name and Password.

6. Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected

Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol..

Repair Disk Permissions

1.On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.

2.Double-click Disk Utility.

3.Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").

4.Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.

5.Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.

Restart the printer. Now you can download and install the printer software and install it. Click on the link below to begin the download and follow the on screen instructions:

Please let me know the outcome.

The same issue here, the printer started to print poor black and ink level was low. I bought an original HP black and cyan inks, installed them and black ink stopped to print at all.

I had similar issue few years ago, when printer was under warranty. After ink cartridge change, the black ink stopped to print. Then HP replaced electronics inside. Now after some time, the same issue happens again.

I did all the troubleshooting steps and cleaned also contacts and nozzle. Hard reset doesn't help, cleaning is just wasting ink and paper. During resetting, there was erro message regarding print head, but it's gone now.

What else can be done, to get the printing?

I'm from Latvia.

I tried all the suggestions, i.e. 2 new cartriges, cleaned the heads and it still does not print the black ink. Both test patterns for all the colors except Black print. What next

I contacted HP support by calling technical support and it was determined it is a faulty sensor. This cannot be repaired by HP. It was suggested to purchase a new printer. I purchased my 5514 in 2012, surprised I could not get more life out of it. I remember when printers lasted quite long. Those were the good old days.
