Same problem. Now reading my THIRD thread on this form about this issue. None of the fixes that worked for some people have worked for me. I've wasted LOTS of time trying to get this brand new black cartridge to print - I even put the old black cartridge back in and now it doesn't print either - not even the medium gray I was getting earlier this afternoon. The 6520 doesn't have removable print heads, so I couldn't even try some of the solutions. I've used only HP printers for decades, but this will be my last one. Time to buy an Epson or Canon.

Well, after a few times of turning the printer off and then back on, it worked just fine and has been doing so for about 6-7 months now. It prints fine in all modes.
When it finally dies, I will research for the best comparable printer to the Photosmart 6520 and buy that one. Hopefully, it won't use ink like crazy.
Go figure.

I am having the exact same issue, just randomly stopped printing black last night. Two brand new HP catridges later and still not printing black. Printer is out of warranty and the steps you listed haven't worked.

I am shattered presently.
I spent almost a total of 3k on hp products
I made sure to buy ONLY genuine hp ink
after 30 minutes on the phone I was told I can get a discount on a new product.
My product only ran out of warranty 10 months ago.
I bought HP because I always buy HP. Always HAD.
Now I have no way to print medical forms I needed desperately for today.
I have no means to buy another product. How can this be customer service when so many are left with the same issue? Although the gentleman on the phone was pleasant... he had me go through everything I already did three times to no avail, which only served to further deplete the ink cartridges that were new before this process...now however they are low. And had me unplugging and cleaning the ink cartridges. I am handicapped but fully did what he said hoping it would help.
If I were independently wealthy I would have bought a new printer not sat on hold.
I was a lifelong customer....I thought. I was proud of my photosmart and my hp envy...now I am in deep seeded regret and left with a big machine that not only wasted money but paper and ink.
The kicker was, at the end of the conversation being told I could buy ink through the hp program at a discount....wait ink? FOR WHAT? You just said my printer has a hardware issue....so why would I need ink when it isn't working?
I find it sad that only a select few are having their issues resolved and I am left here penniless.
My advice is this, tell the person before hand that there is nothing that can be done and that your product is a cheap piece of rubbish that you paid too much for.

Thank you so much. The hot water actually worked. I did it for about 10 minutes and it actually worked. Followed the instructions on the ehow link and also cleaned the printer contacts with water and a cotton swab. Works great. Much appreciation.
