I bought a new set of HP cartridges in December 2017 for around £30 - Black/Cyan/Magenta/Yellow. Yesterday I printed 2 pages, the black ink came out at poor quality. The HP now reports low ink on the black cartridge. I don't print much, the printer's page count is only 19 more than it was when I bought the cartridges.
The advertised yield for these cartridges is 250 pages. I'm very disappointed! I haven't tried the maintenance tools yet because the combination of performance and reports from the printer suggest the cartridge is running low rather than this being a printer problem.
Is this normal? I've had this printer for some years and have always suspected it runs out of ink quickly, but only last December decided to properly monitor its performance. Can I get some replacement cartridges free of charge? The HP website seems to offer support for printers but I can't find support for cartridges.

Good Day. Thank you for posting your query in the HP community. I read the post regarding issues with the black ink cartridge as it states that it is low on ink. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Superb description and spectacular troubleshooting and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:
- Did you replace the ink cartridge and check again?
- Did you make copies directly from the printer to isolate the issue further?
Let me keep you posted that the evidence points to a cartridge issue and this is only an attempt to try and resolve the issue. If it does not work the printer needs to be replaced by contacting HP phone support.
For now, try these steps:
- Perform a hard reset again on the printer even if you’ve done it before from this link: https://hp.care/2jxGDlW by following instructions from the section “Step 1: Reset the printer”
- If it persists, then update the printer’s firmware by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2rHKwDD
- Also make 2 copies of a document in black directly from the printer and check if it copies correctly?
- If black is faded or does not print then there could be an issue with the black ink cartridge.
Now check for issue resolution. If it continues, then perform all the relevant steps from this link: https://hp.care/2yTSwE7 (HP Printers - 'Ink System Failure' or '0x ...' Error Code Displays)
- Step 1: Use genuine HP ink cartridges
- Step 2: Reset the printer
- Step 3: Check estimated ink levels
- Step 4: Clean the ink cartridge vents and contacts
- Step 5: Clean the printhead with an automated tool
- Step 6: Manually clean the printhead.
Now check if the issue gets fixed.
If the issue continues, then contact HP phone support to get the ink cartridge replaced as it is faulty. As long as there is no issue with the printer’s hardware this should do the trick for you. I am being honest about it by keeping your best interest in mind without beating around the bush.

This took far less effort than I feared. I removed and re-inserted the cartridges, then printed a couple of documents OK. The only remaining issue is my black cartridge appears quite low compared to the others, but I shall see how long it lasts. Thanks for your help.
