My printer suddenly stopped printing black ink. My ink levels are not low. The cartridges are in properly and securely. I have run all of the proper tests and cleaned the cartiridges. I am still able to print in color but absolutely nothing will print in black - not even the test sheets.

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.
MKazi is at your service.
I understand that you have an HP Photosmart e-All-in-One Printer series - D110 printer and it does not print in black color. Fabulous diagnostics, spectacular analysis of the issue by you. Kudos to you for that. You have done a remarkable job in troubleshooting this issue.
Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges or refilled ink?
Have you cleaned the ink cartridges using the printer's front panel menu or by cleaning them manually with your hand?
Incase, you have not cleaned the cartridges manually by hand then please refer to the following steps:
- Remove the ink cartridges out.
- Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Also, do not re-tape the cartridges. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
Figure : Do not touch the contacts or nozzles
-
Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the ink nozzles face up.
-
Lightly moisten a clean, foam-rubber swab with distilled water.
-
Clean the face and edges around the ink nozzle with the swab.
NOTE: Do not clean the ink nozzle plate.
Figure : Clean the area around the ink nozzle
-
Nozzle plate - DO NOT CLEAN
-
Area surrounding ink nozzle - Do clean
-
Cartridge contacts - Do not clean
-
Let the cartridge sit for 10 minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a new swab to dry it.
-
Also clean the internal contacts of the printer where the cartridge fits in.
-
Insert the cartridge into its designated slot. The black parallelogram icon (
) designates the slot for the black cartridge, and the magenta half circle icon (
) designates the slot for the color cartridge.
If the printer continues to not print the black color then try replacing the black cartridge. If the printer is able to print black with the second black cartridge then it indicates that the first black cartridge was defective. In such a case you may contact our HP phone support team to seek a replacement for the defective cartridge.
Secondly, if the printer does not print in black color even after replacing the black cartridge then it points towards a printer issue and you may check for the available service options by contacting out phone support team. Then phone support team can be reached via this link: https://hp.care/2uJxnug
Hope this information helps. Please let me know how it goes.
Good luck! 🙂

Thank you. I am using a genuine HP (new - not recycled) cartirdge. However, I had not tried physically cleaning the actual ink cartirdge and where it connects to the printer.
Unfortunately, this did not solve my problem. I cleaned the cartridge and it still won't print in black ink.
I'm thinking that my only option is to try a new ink cartridge - and, if that doesn't work, buy a new printer. I've had this printer for MANY years. So it might be time.
Thank you again for the good advice.
