I followed the links and eventually got to the "solution' for cleaning the print head by soaking it in hot water. That did not work on my original print head; I ended up buying a new print head from HP, which resolved the problem, but about 2 months later, the problem returned. This time, the "soak in water" solution DID fix the problem.

I purchased a "New" printhead from a site in eBay, received it just today and I'm not sure that it is a genuine HP product, even though it could be in the "never used" category. Are other companies permitted to sell parts for HP printers? At any rate I've contacted the seller (who unfortunately is in China) to inquire as to the lineage of this part - I'm hesitant to install it until I know whether I have a snowball's chance that it will function. It was shipped to me from New Jersey. I have wasted a lifetime with this printer - I just wish I didn't like it so much!

Did you ever find a solution to your print problem? I'm having the same problem. I replaced my photo cartridge (HP Photosmart C309a Premium) and the black just won't print. All other cartridges are 95% full (including the standard black), and all are XL. Colors are lighter than usual too. Stumped and my printer is out of warranty. I don't really want to buy another printer, but I've spent a month of Sundays trying to get this printer to work consistently, and it's just not happening.

Never could get it to work! It's sitting idle - had to purchase a different printer. I'm still hoping that someone will explain why/how this happens and why in the world is a product offered that cannot be fixed? I now am using an HP 6520 series printer with no issues so far. The 309g is still my favorite however. Would like to see more posts on this.

Printer is out of warrantee - purchased in 2010. I did run clean print heads software during all this. It didn't make a difference. Waiting to see other posting to see how to take things apart to clean assembly.

Additionally, that does not address the problem about reinstalling. It asks for a password. I do not have a password and never had a password. It was not required when I bought the printer in 2010 and installed it on a Windows 95 machine.

The problem reoccurred AGAIN and this time NONE of the recommended solutions helped. I admitted defeat and bought a Brother MFC-J6920DW printer. The photo quality is NOT as good as the HP, but it is FASTER, QUIETER, has TWO trays (letter and legal), all the same features of the HP and uses FAR FAR LESS ink! I bought this based on a recommendation from Consumer Reports.
