HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 All-in-One Printer
Ubuntu LTS

Hello,

I've got a HP Printer 9010 Pro, which crashed a time ago.
I've done a factory reset to get it "unstuck".
Sadly now it's more stuck, it won't go past the printing of the alignment page, which I actually don't care about because I just want to use the scanning functionality.

I'm using genuine HP cartridges, some have run out of ink, but as I don't have the need to print right now I don't care and would just want to make use of the scanning functionality of my device.

How can I bypass this obnoxious menu so I can use my device?
As said I'm not going to add ink, into a device I'm not planning on using to print with but only using to scan.
So replacing my ink cartridges is not going to be a useful solution, as I've seen mentioned very often on this support forum.

Hi @mikevankuik

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 is stuck at the alignment page printing and you're primarily interested in using the scanner, here are some steps to help you bypass the issue and utilize the scanning functionality:

  1. Skip Alignment:

    • If possible, try to skip the alignment process by canceling it on the printer’s display.
    • Press the "Cancel" button on the printer panel to see if it ends the alignment print.
  2. Install HP Linux Imaging and Printing Software (HPLIP):

    • Ensure you have the latest version of HPLIP installed on your Ubuntu system. This software supports printing and scanning for HP printers.
    • You can install or update HPLIP through the terminal with the following commands:
      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get install hplip

  3. Set Up HPLIP for Scanning:

    • Open the HP Device Manager by typing hp-toolbox in the terminal. This will give you access to printer and scanner settings.
    • Configure your printer within this utility to ensure it's recognized both for printing (if needed later) and scanning.
  4. Use Simple Scan or XSane:

    • Use scanning applications like Simple Scan or XSane. These are commonly available on Ubuntu and work well with most HP printers.
    • Open Simple Scan or XSane, and check if your HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 is recognized. If it is, you should be able to use the scanning features without any additional setup.
  5. Paper and Ink Error Bypass:

    • If you encounter errors related to ink levels or paper while trying to scan, those should not impact the scanning capability. However, make sure there are no physical jams or obstacles.
    • Since you're using genuine HP cartridges, technical issues related to ink should be minimal, but for purely scanning, ink levels typically won’t stop functionality.
  6. Firmware Update:

    • Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer via HP's support website, which might resolve issues related to the printer's calibration loop.

Following these steps should help you access the scanner functionality without needing to print the alignment page, especially when you're not currently concerned with printing capabilities.
