* "Automatically Send Annoymous Data"....and the ON/OFF button is GREYED/Inactive...with OFF greyed Out. This buttom cannot be moved....it is total inactive

Welcome to the HP Forums!
Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.
I reviewed your post and I understand that you want to know how to check whether the printer is sending usage information to HP.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
The HP cartridges used with this printer contain a memory chip that assists in the operation of the printer. In addition, this memory chip stores a limited set of anonymous information about the usage of the printer, which might include the following: the number of pages printed using the cartridge, the page coverage, frequency of printing, and the printing modes used. This information helps HP design future printers to meet our customers' printing needs. The data collected from the cartridge memory chip does not contain information that can be used to identify a customer or user of the cartridge or their printer. HP collects a sampling of the memory chips from cartridges returned to HP's free return and recycling program (HP Planet Partners: http://hp.care/2DmUfnW). The memory chips from this sampling are read and studied in order to improve future HP printers. HP partners who assist in recycling this cartridge might have access to this data, as well. Any third party possessing the cartridge might have access to the anonymous information on the memory chip. If you prefer to not allow access to this information, you can render the chip inoperable. However, after you render the memory chip inoperable, the cartridge cannot be used in an HP printer. If you are concerned about providing this anonymous information, you can make this information inaccessible by turning off the memory chip's ability to collect the printer's usage information.
To disable the usage information function:
1. From the printer control panel, touch and slide your finger across the screen and then touch Setup.
2. Select Tools, and then touch Cartridge Chip Information.
3. Touch OK to disable usage information collection.
For more information please refer to the below user manual for your printer.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
If the solution provided helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. Your feedback counts!
Take care.
Cheers!

I very much appricate your time beit during employment hours, or, personal time. The instructions provided to disable reporting are incorrect for my HP Printer. On my OF PRO 6978...if I go to Setup, I see under Preferences
1) "Store Anonymous Usage Information"...the slide switch displays ON
2) " Automatically Send Anonymous Date"...the slide switch displays OFF and is in GREY.
I found it unconshanable that a manufacturer would collect, store and send information about the customers use of their Product without a full Disclose and Consent of ther Owner of that Printer.
Please confirm from what I have outrlined above, my Printer is collecting Usage information, its is storing that information...be it in the cartridges or Printer itself...BUT IT IS NOT...ever sending this information or for that matter, any information to HP.
HP does not expressly or otherwise have my approval to receic=ve any information from my HP Officejet Pro 6978 Printer. I do not want this Printer to be sending any information via the Internet or any other source.
Please refer this response to HP for a formal response, the Printer is Registered via serial number so my personal contact information is available at HP for that response.
