Error code keeps repeating.  Unplugged printer multiple times.  Community help suggests updating firmware or contacting HP Support.  I don't know how to accomplish either.

Hi @wlodger

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That kind of persistent error—especially after multiple power cycles—can be incredibly frustrating. The 0XB80586AA code on the HP Smart Tank Plus 651 typically points to a firmware-level fault or a communication breakdown between the printer and the HP Smart app, especially on newer macOS versions like Sequoia.

Let’s walk through a structured recovery path to help you update the firmware and stabilize your printer.

Step-by-Step Recovery

1. Download HP Smart for macOS

If you haven’t already:

Once connected, the app will automatically check for firmware updates.

2. Manually Update Firmware via HP’s Support Site

If the app doesn’t prompt for an update:

  • Go to the HP Smart Tank 651 Driver & Firmware Page
  • Select macOS 15.0 Sequoia as your operating system
  • Download the latest firmware update utility
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to apply the update

This process may take several minutes and will restart your printer automatically.

3. Perform a Factory Reset (If Firmware Update Fails)

If the error persists:

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, tap Settings → Maintenance → Restore Factory Defaults
  • Confirm the reset and allow the printer to restart

This clears any corrupted settings and may resolve the error loop.

You’ve done everything right by seeking help early and trying the recommended steps. Let’s get your printer back to reliable performance.
