I have been trying to print since Christmas Eve when my printer showed an E1 error.  I only ever print 8 1/2 x 11 documents.  I did a factory reset and it continues to show this error whenever I print from Word and from some web pages.  I can print from other webpages just fine.  My page setup is correct through word, it is set up for 8 1/2 x 11 paper.  I have the correct paper loaded in the tray and have removed it and reloaded it several times.  This printer is not even a year old and I need it for school.  I don't know what else to do.

Hi @Kimmiebaby044,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The E1 error on HP Smart Tank printers usually indicates a paper jam or a paper sensor issue. Since you've mentioned that you've already checked and reloaded the paper correctly, there might be some other issues causing the error. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the E1 error.

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Open all access doors and trays and inspect the printer for any stuck paper. Even a small piece of paper can cause the E1 error.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, disconnect the power cord, and wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model on the HP support website. Updating the firmware may resolve software-related issues.

Check Paper Settings in Word:

  • Make sure that the paper size settings in Word match the actual paper size you have loaded in the printer.

Print a Test Page:

  • Use the printer's control panel to print a test page. This can help you determine if the issue is specific to certain documents or if it's a general problem.

Clean Paper Feed Rollers:

  • Dust or debris on the paper feed rollers can cause paper jams. Clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.

Inspect Paper Path:

  • Ensure there are no foreign objects or debris blocking the paper path. Shine a flashlight into the paper path to check for any obstructions.

Check Printer Settings:

  • Verify that the printer settings match the paper size and type you are using. Adjust the settings through the printer menu if needed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I have tried all of these solutions to no avail.  Printing from my phone for some reason used to always be set to letter, but now is changing all of my documents to be printed 5x7 which will print on a regular sheet of paper, just smaller.  When I try to print the same document from my computer, utilizing the settings and ensuring that the 8 1/2" x 11" paper setting is set, I get the E1 error, even though 8 1/2" x 11" paper is loaded.  I reset the printer, I restarted the router.  I don't know what else to do since I start school on the 22nd and will have a tremendous amount of paperwork to print.

This all started the day I printed out my new insurance cards, which I have done multiple times before, but these cards were from a new company and a different site.  Ever since then, I have been unable to print properly.
