hp smart tank 7001
Microsoft Windows 11

For some reason the registration system is down so I can't add this new printer to my HP profile. I just bought a HP Smart Tank 7001. If I print a 2-page print job almost every time the second piece of paper jams up completely into an accordion and stops the system. The paper is the same standard printing paper I use on my four other printers without any issues. The pages that do print have a crease about 1 inch in. I found that other people here reported the same issue but there's no functional resolution and their issues are closed out. I'm hoping someone has found a real solution so I don't have to return the printer.

SOLVED!! Here is what I did to solve the problem of the HP printer jamming and also it creating a crease about 1" in from the edge of the paper.

FIRST: The way the HP printer is set up, the 8.5x11 paper is not held in any way at it's "bottom edge". Every other printer I've owned in memory has had a sliding bar which ensures the bottom edge of the printer is lined up. This printer just has empty space at the bottom end of the paper. I cut a piece of foam to fit into that area so that the printer paper has a bottom edge to keep it in place.

SECOND: The HP printer by default is set to double-sided printing. I would almost never use double-sided printing. I set the default to be OFF for double-sided printing. I then rebooted my computer.

After those two changes, my printer has not jammed and it hasn't had any creasing on the paper. I will report back if I see any issues going forward, but I believe these changes have fixed the issues my brand new HP Smart Tank 7001 was having.

Please let me know if these fixes work for you.

Now I will separately work on figuring out why the HP printer registration system seems to be giving errors. I'll create a separate ticket specifically on that if I can't get registration to work.

Hi @lisashea,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is to invest in a new printer like the HP Smart Tank 7001 and face issues right out of the box. Let’s walk through the right steps to resolve the paper jamming and creasing issue, and also address the registration system problem.

Issue 1: Paper Jams and Accordion Folding on Second Page

This can be caused by paper feed alignmentroller contamination, or internal mechanical misalignment. Here's how to fix it:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

  1. Check Paper Type and Load
    • Use clean, flat, 75–90 gsm (20–24 lb) paper.
    • Fan the stack before loading and do not overfill the tray.
    • Adjust the paper width guides snugly against the paper.

  2. Clean the Paper Feed Rollers
    • Power off the printer and unplug it.
    • Remove the input tray and locate the grey paper pick rollers.
    • Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to clean the rollers.
    • Rotate the rollers manually to clean all sides.
    • Let them dry for 10–15 minutes before powering the printer back on.

  1. Reset the Printer
    • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
    • Wait 60 seconds.
    • Plug it back in and turn it on.

  2. Check for Internal Obstructions
    • Open the ink access door and rear access panel.
    • Remove any visible debris or jammed paper.
    • Ensure the duplexer plate is seated properly.

  3. Print a Test Page
    • Use the HP Smart app or printer control panel to print a test page.
    • If the issue persists, the printer may need servicing.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

This reply seems to be simply a regurgitation of the standard HP tech support page, which I had already tried. From my research in the forums, the other people having this same issue had already tried those solutions as well. So, no, having a clean printer and loading new paper properly does not fix the jamming and creasing issue.

Also, the reply said it would address my registration issue but then did not mention it at all after that.
