iOS

The iOS App, HP Smart, seldom recognizes the 3789 Model. After each printing session I have to restart the Printer for the App to pick it.

Also, the Printer seems to be changing its IP Address on its own whim]. Sometimes it is 192.168.0.115, at others it is 192.168.0.02 or 192.168.0.05. The worst thing is that you have to print the whole settings on a piece of paper to know which IP the printer is on.

Is there any solution to these daily headaches, or should I simply throw the printer in garbage?

@Jlesalle

I have never used a printer that lacks a printer control panel.

The following might work but is admittedly based on what I know about a completely different class of printer.

Discussion

The printer does not know to use a static, assigned IP address unless you assign the address.

This is not a "brand" thing, it is a network thing.

That is, the network must be configured to tell connected devices how to behave.

The device must be configured to connect to the network.

If the network is using DHCP, for example, when the router detects the device requesting connection, the router will assign an address to that device from its available DHCP range set.

If there is no DHCP server, the printer assigns its own address.

Circumvent the behavior of rotating DHCP address assignment or self-set addressing by assigning an address for the printer to use whenever it connects to your network.

Log into your your network router and assign a single IP address for the printer.

Set the printer to use that IP address to connect to the network.

The printer can be made to use that address whenever it connects to your network.

The following will work if the printer is already attached to your network and you can control / access the printer via the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Failing that option, see the note under References (later in this message)

Open the HP Smart Application

If asked to do so, respond to the prompt asking for your HP sign-in using your HP account userid and the password you use here)

NOTE: If you are not signed-in and would like to do so (without having been prompted), click Settings to see the "My Account" setup in the first entry of the Settings bar.

Click Add / Set Up a Printer

Scroll all the way down to the Advanced section (column on left side of screen)

Click Advanced Settings

Wait for the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to open on your browser (likely Safari)

Note:  The Home panel may be blank - ignore it if so - all the other tabs let you do what is needed

Click tab Network

Select either Wired (for Ethernet) or Wireless  (category names vary)

IPv4 Configuration

To assign a static IP address:

Select "Manual IP"

Assign / Enter the parameters for your network

Click Apply to save changes

Expect the connection to break while the printer resets the IP address.

Wait a minute or two, before reopening the App / Settings / EWS

Example

EWS_9025_Network_Wired_IPv4_Static-Manual_IP_1EWS_9025_Network_Wired_IPv4_Static-Manual_IP_1

Note:  This printer lacks the nice Printer Control Panel screen that allows you to enter (and see) printer information right on the printer.  Instead, the printer uses a few lights and icons to indicate what it is doing (and what it wants from you).

If the printer is already on the network, you can perhaps use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / check / configure the printer.

If the printer does not (can not) open in EWS, you must deal with the printer on its terms.
