Solution: Extreme frustration connecting HP wireless printer to Hitron router modem. With your Browser, access Hitron modem software settings by entering 192.168.0.1  in address. Hitron menus appear. Must change Wireless and SSID Settings, Security Mode from WPA2-PSK to Auto (WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK).  Then on printer, perform Wireless Setup Wizard. It will now ask for router password rather than saying encryption not enabled. Will connect successfully. Good luck.

+1 to the answer above, and some additional detail that got it working for me (HP LaserJet P1102w, Hitron CODA-4582):

  • I set the 2.4ghz Auth to "Auto (WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK)", just like OP stated
  • I installed the full software suite from HP for my model ("hp_LJP1100_P1560_P1600_Full_Solution" etc. etc.)
  • I connected the printer to my PC via USB and turned it on
  • I hit the Windows key, typed in "Wireless", and completely by chance I found HP's "Wireless Configuration" app, which I believe was installed as part of that full software suite. The HP Smart app could not configure my wireless settings (it simply spat out "Not Supported" when I clicked "Wireless settings" for my printer)
  • I ran that "Wireless Configuration" app, found my WiFi network, and successfully completed setup

That application was not mentioned in a single HP help article or thread I found. Just so painful.
