Hi all. Hoping the community can help with a basic support request...
We have an HP DeskJet2720e which was donated by a neighbour. It's out of warranty and still "locked" to their Instant Ink account.
I have bought replacement ink cartridges and successfully used the printer on several occasions.
This week I have an issue with printing - I get a Printer Offline error.
I am not aware of any configuration change to my laptop (Lenovo / Windows 10), network (BT home hub) or the printer (wireless connection). The printer lights and settings appear to be normal and there do not appear to be any open doors, paper jams, etc on the printer.
As we're out of warranty, I don't have the option of (free) phone support and the HP chatbot isn't much help.
Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot? I've done the usual power on / off of all devices and updating any drivers etc.
Thank you
Chris

Hi @Blueghoti,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When your HP Deskjet 2720e printer is showing as offline, it means that your computer is unable to communicate with the printer, and therefore, you won't be able to print documents. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Check Physical Connections:
- Ensure that the printer is powered on and connected to your computer or network via USB or Wi-Fi.
- Make sure the printer has paper and ink or toner.
Restart the Printer:
- Sometimes, simply turning off the printer, waiting for a few seconds, and then turning it back on can resolve connectivity issues.
Restart Your Computer:
- Restarting your computer can refresh the connection between your computer and the printer.
Check Printer Status:
- On your computer, go to the Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac) and open the "Devices and Printers" or "Printers & Scanners" section.
- Find your HP Deskjet 2720e in the list of installed printers. If it's listed as offline, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) on it and select "Set as default printer."
Cancel Pending Print Jobs:
- If there are any pending print jobs in the print queue, try cancelling them and then re-send a print job to see if that resolves the issue.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause offline issues. Visit the HP website to download and install the latest printer drivers for your model.
Check Network Connection:
- If your printer is connected via Wi-Fi, make sure it's on the same network as your computer. Check the Wi-Fi settings on the printer and ensure it's connected to the correct network.
Reinstall Printer Software:
- Sometimes, uninstalling and then reinstalling the printer software can resolve offline issues.
Check for Error Messages:
- Look for any error messages or codes on the printer's display. These messages can provide clues about what might be causing the issue.
Printer Troubleshooter:
- Both Windows and Mac operating systems have built-in printer troubleshooters. Use these tools to diagnose and fix printer issues.
Firewall/Antivirus Software:
- Your firewall or antivirus software may block communication with the printer. Check the software settings and make sure it's not blocking the printer.
By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and resolve the offline issue with your HP Deskjet 2720e printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
