I cant.

I load the glossy photo paper. In Windows photos I select the settings recommended. And its still saying out of paper.

It is possible that the mystery update caused trouble with the printing software.  It is less likely a problem with the software if you can still print other jobs (documents, PDF files, excel sheets, for example).

After you change / load paper in the printer, look for the message on the printer control panel to retain or change the paper size / type.

User Guide > Chapter 2 - Page 10

Check / Adjust the Paper at the Printer Panel

The printer may need to be told about the change in paper size.

For example, for printers with a printer control panel, the following might be relevant:

Open Printer Tray, add desired paper type

Close Tray

IF applicable for your printer:

On the printer control panel, Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down list, Select Custom

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

if the printer is on the network, see if the Embedded Web Server can help you adjust the Paper Settings for the paper in the printer.  The adjustments, as available, will likely be in tab "Settings" and perhaps in a sub-topic "Preferences".  (Options vary by printer.)

ews

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Once the paper is loaded and the printer control panel has been updated, you should be ready to print.

None of this guarantees you can print your photo without a border along one or more edges, of course.  The Photo Creations software will at least show you what is happening.  The software also provides simple editing tools (crop, for example) to allow you to select what is included in the printed photo image.

Tried all that. The settinhgs are all correct according to the documentation.

I dont want to install HP photo software. I shouldn't have to to get this to work.

I go to print, the printer makes a bit of a noise then it says  "Out of paper"

Its not out of paper.

If the printer is making an unusual amount of noise, it may have a mechanical problem.

 "Unusual" is normally defined as the amount of noise it is making "now" compared to when the printer was working.  Since the printer has never worked in the three years you have had it, comparisons of "good noise" and "bad noise" are (of course) useless in context.  Nonetheless, printers do make noise - some sounds are normal and some sounds are not.  Never having had a working setup means that noise (hums, knocks, clicks, grinding) is harder to use as a diagnostic tool.  You might watch some videos on the 'net (that include sound) to help you determine if your printer sounds "right".

It could be the paper (too dry, too damp, too much, or too few sheets),

It could be the load procedure,

It could be the settings,

It could be a hardware problem (sensor, tray, pickup)

Less likely,

It could be a communication problem (note the word "less")

It could be a conflict between whatever software you are using, the printer (Full Feature) software, and Windows print drivers.

If you do not have the Full Feature Software installed, things do generally work, though many of the features and settings normally available on the printer will be missing.

Programs like Photo Creations work to enhance your printing experience and are (certainly) not mandatory.

If you have not done so, complete the Troubleshooting and try the Print and Scan Doctor, too.

The Doctor can help with several issues.

If I think of anything else, I will post back.

Good Luck.
