I realize this has been asked many times, but I still cannot find a solution. I haven't been able to use my HP envy photo 7858 printer since I refilled the HP cartridge with my own ink almost 2 years ago. No functions (print, copy) works. I'd like to try again, as it was a new printer back then. I'm getting the error message that "cartridges appear to be missing". I use black ink only. I've tried all the suggestions I already read about. Is there any new, recent help with this? Thank you.

Hi @dee0423,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I see that you have an issue using refilled HP ink cartridges on your printer.
A) Please follow the steps below to fix the issue.
1) Take out the cartridges
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges
B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.
C) If the issue still persists, refer to this link for more information related to using non-HP ink cartridges.
If you are using generic, refilled or Non HP ink cartridges and the above steps do not help. You will have to contact the generic ink cartridge manufacturer to assist you further with it or you will have to use genuine HP ink cartridges to resume printing.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

Thank you for your suggestions, Irwin6. I followed the steps but still getting the error message about missing cartridges. Did I need to close the cover after each time I removed the cartridge?
I am refilling the empty HP cartridge with ink I purchased (done successfully many times on my previous HP printer), so these are not generic ink cartridges.
I understand HP now marks them somehow so they can’t be refilled?
Any other suggestions, please? TY!

Hi @dee0423,
I am sorry to hear that the above steps did not help much but i do appreciate your efforts in performing the troubleshooting steps.
If the indicated refilled ink cartridge is not working, you will have to replace them with another ink cartridge refilled or with a new ink cartridge that is compatible with your printer to continue printing.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

Hi @dee0423,
I am sorry to hear that the above steps did not help much in removing the ink cartridge error.
The only way to override the error message is by replacing the ink cartridge that has an error.
Take care and have a great day ahead!
