Just helped setup a new HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e for my Uncle, and set went fine and can print just perfectly.
It is just connected to the Apple iMac via USB cord (no wireless printing). The issue is, if you don't print for a while (like couple hours or half a day) you need to restart the printer first and then it will print. I'm wondering, why that is and is there anything that I could try to help correct this issue. Nothing shows up on the printer display and I'm wondering if there is a sleep mode on it that needs to make the printer wake up when printing. Not sure and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony

Hi @yNoTbigT,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I'd like to help!
I understand you have restart the printer to print from the mac.
Try the below suggestions -
Try updating mac and printer firmware
To update the printer's firmware, refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
To update Mac, try these steps - How to update the software on your Mac
Make sure the cable is directly connected between the Mac and the printer.
The use of a USB hub is not recommended.
Also, make sure the cable is connected to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac
Do you have an Anti-virus/firewall installed on the Mac? If yes, disable the same for time being.
- You may check this in System Information > Applications>utilities folder
- You can also hold down the option key and click on the Apple at the top left of the screen to get to System Information
- Click System Report.
- Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB. USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus. The printer should be under the USB 2.0 Bus
Set up a USB printer connection with a built-in driver (Mac)
When you connect the printer USB cable, macOS automatically installs and adds your printer to provide basic printing functionality.
Click the Apple icon , click System Preferences, and then click Software Update. Install any available updates, and then restart your Mac.
Make sure there is an open USB port available directly on your computer. If you use a USB hub or docking station, the printer might not receive enough power to operate properly.
Click the Apple icon , click System Preferences, and then click Printers & Scanners, Print and Scan, or Print and Fax.
If your printer displays in the list, select it, and then click the Minus sign to remove the printer.
Connect the printer USB cable to the computer.
If prompted to download new software, follow the instructions to install it.
Confirm your printer is listed under Printers.
If your printer is in the list, the setup is complete.
If your printer is not in the list, continue with these steps.
Click the Plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, and then select the name of your printer.
From the Use or Print Using drop-down menu, select AirPrint or Secure AirPrint, and then click Add.
If AirPrint is not an available option, select the printer name, or click Select Software to choose a driver.
