Hi @Mino11,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for sharing what you're going through with your new HP Smart Tank 5107. I can imagine how disheartening it must feel, especially after the excitement of setting up a brand-new printer, only to be greeted by a stubborn message saying “Black ink is out”, even though you’ve filled it up with care. Let’s gently walk through this together and get your printer back to printing beautifully.
Recommended Steps to Fix the “Black Ink is Out” Issue
Here’s a warm and clear guide to help you resolve this issue:
1. Check Ink Tank and Ink Type
- Make sure you’ve used HP GT53 or GT53XL black ink, which is specially formulated for Smart Tank printers.
- If you accidentally used a different ink (even another HP color), it may not be recognized correctly or could clog the printhead.

2. Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle
Sometimes the ink is there, but the printhead is clogged or not primed properly.
- On the printer control panel or via the HP Smart App, go to: Settings → Maintenance → Clean Printhead
- Run the cleaning cycle 2–3 times if needed.
- Print a test page to check if black ink appears.

3. Prime the Ink System (If Not Done During Setup)
If the printer didn’t go through the initial ink priming, it may not detect the ink properly.
- Turn off the printer.
- Hold the monochrome copy button and power button together for 5–10 seconds.
- This should trigger the setup mode and initiate ink priming.

4. Check for Air Bubbles or Dry Ink
Air bubbles or dried ink can block the flow even if the tank is full.
- Gently tap the printer or rock it side to side.
- Avoid shaking the ink bottle before filling it can introduce bubbles.
- If the printer was unused for a while, ink may have dried in the nozzles.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
