Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

May be an old printer but by Deskjet 3820 just asked to do a printer "Upgrade".  After that, the next time I started the printer it says "Black cartridge is not intended for this printer."  Same cartridge I have always used.  No difference when I went out and bought a new cartridge.  Tried all attempts to "reset" printer.  Nothing has worked.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Larry_2000,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP Deskjet 3820 printer is encountering an error message regarding the black cartridge not being intended for the printer, despite it being the same cartridge you've always used. This can be frustrating, but there are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot this issue.

  • Check Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridge you're using is indeed compatible with your HP Deskjet 3820 printer. Sometimes, cartridges might look similar but have slight variations that make them incompatible.
  • Clean Contacts: Remove the black cartridge from the printer and clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water. Dust or debris on the contacts can sometimes interfere with proper communication.
  • Reinstall Cartridge: After cleaning, reinsert the black cartridge into the printer and make sure it is securely seated. Sometimes, improper installation can trigger error messages.
  • Restart Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on again. This can sometimes clear temporary errors.
  • Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP Deskjet 3820 printer. Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve compatibility issues with cartridges.

By going through these steps, you should be able to either resolve the issue or determine if further action is needed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
