My HP5105 Smart Tank printer has stopped printing. It's showing an online and will print the test page from HP Print and Scan Doctor, but it won't print any Word or PDF documents from my PC. The wireless network is working fine. The printer has always been temperamental, often going offline and having to be reconnected. Can anyone help?

If your HP Smart Tank 5105 prints a test page via HP Print and Scan Doctor but won’t print Word or PDF documents from your PC, it’s likely a software or driver-related issue. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and resolve it:

Run HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool
HP has a built-in tool in the HP Smart app that can automatically detect and fix common printing issues.
- Download or open the HP Smart app/HP App
- Go to Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
- Follow the prompts to let the tool scan and repair issues.
Use Diagnose & Fix in the HP app to repair common printing issues (Windows, macOS) | HP® Support
Check Default Printer Settings
Sometimes, the wrong printer is selected.
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click your HP Smart Tank 5105 and select Set as Default Printer.
- Try printing again.
Clear Print Queue
A stuck job can block new ones.
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Double-click your printer and cancel all pending jobs.
- Restart your PC and printer.
Reinstall the Printer Driver
Corrupted drivers can cause printing failures.
- Uninstall the printer from Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Go to Official HP® Support and download the latest full feature software.
- Reinstall and reconnect your printer.
Check Application-Specific Issues
If the issue is only with Word or PDF:
- Try printing from another app (e.g., Notepad).
- If it works, update or repair the problematic app (Word or PDF reader).
- For PDFs, try printing from Adobe Acrobat Reader instead of browser preview.
Update Windows
Ensure your system is up to date:
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all pending updates.
Try USB Connection (Optional)
If wireless is unstable, try connecting the printer via USB and test printing.
I hope your issue is now resolved. If not, feel free to reply and we’ll continue helping until everything’s sorted!

Thank you Mac3Aj for your detailed advice. I tried most of the above and it is now printing again. The printer has never been very reliable, but it tends to right itself if I turn it on/off and restart the PC. I was a bit worried when that didn't work. I can't find Diagnose & Fix in the HP Smart app - which heading is it under? (I'm using the Japanese version, which complicates things, but it should all be the same?).
