Welcome to HP support community.
Did you make a copy and check if that prints in black?
Meanwhile:
Print a Print Quality Diagnostic report
-
Load plain, white paper in the tray.
-
From the control panel home screen, touch the Settings icon
. -
Touch Tools, and then touch Print Quality Report.
The printer prints the Print Quality Diagnostic report.

If that does not print in black, follow the below steps:
Clean the printhead
-
Make sure that plain white U.S. letter or A4 size paper is loaded in the tray.
-
From the control panel home screen, touch the Settings icon
, and then touch Tools. -
Touch the Down Arrow
, and then touch Clean Printhead. The printer cleans the printheads, and then prints a test page. -
Review the print quality on the test page.

-
If the print quality on the test page is satisfactory, return to the current print job.
-
If the print quality on the test page is unsatisfactory, perform a secondary cleaning of the printhead.

My dear Sandy,
Thank you so much for your reply to my message.
I went through all the phases you mentioned.
The print quality on the test page was still unsatisfactory (i.e. no result), so I performed a third cleaning of the printhead.
As I expected without any success; black still refuses to print.
And doesn't copy in black too.
The problem occured for the first time when I replaced the colour cartridges.
I also contacted the Dutch HP service desk and explained my problem.
After a chat of an hour and a half the agent advised to buy a new printer.
That's not the answer I want to hear, so I started this community search for fellow sufferers of not printing black HP 5520's.

This seems to be a cartridge issue.
I would suggest you to replace the black cartridge and check if that works.
Cheers.
