HP6400
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My old HP6350 stopped talking to the computer even after I plugged an ethernet cable in. So I bought a new 6400 series and although I can scan through HOP Smart when I ask it to print anything nothing happens. Now the E9 is flashiing along with a red cross a green tick a strange orange symbol. The printer aperture light is orange and there is a light flashing on the corner of the scan deck and another on the side of the paper carrier next to the control panel. Any ideas?

I can now no longer scan.  HP Smart recognises the printer but says it is offline?????

@Niveketak, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to use the printer. An E9 error occurs when a problem occurs during a printer firmware update.

  1. Set up the wireless setup again.

For more information, go to Wireless Printer Setup.

  2. Touch the Information button .

If the information page prints, the printer is back to normal state.

If the printer fails to print the Information page, it is still in recovery mode and needs to download the firmware again.

    NOTE:

During recovery mode, the printer automatically downloads firmware from the cloud. Leave the printer about 2 hours, depending on your network speed, to complete firmware download and update.

Use the HP Scan and Capture app to scan and check if that works. You may also refer to - How to scan with an HP printer

This may not help but maybe a little.  I set up my envy 6485 printer yesterday and went crazy because the Smart box would say printer was "Offline" but then I was still able to print from my desk PC and also scan from printer to desk PC.  A person I was speaking to today said she has the same situation but also has instant ink and still gets the ink mailed to her automatically on time and is able to print and scan so she ignores that "offline" statement.  Unfortunately I kept trying to fix that last night and since this morning when I turn on the printer it flashes lights for a while with a E 9 indication and then a constant white light by the paper tray and it can't print or scan. I should of quit while ahead as all I need to do is print and scan from my den, quite simple.  Good Luck, Wally 87

Thanks Wally I had exactly the same experience and the printer showed offline in HP Smart with all the lights and E9 showing. A friend connected his phone to our network and successfully printed from his phone. Since then it works OK if I do not use HP Smart, the scanner won't work though so I have downloaded Windows own scanner which works fine. Thanks for the indo.

The printer showed offline in HP Smart even after reloading the firmware with all the lights and E9 showing. A friend connected his phone to our network and successfully printed from his phone. Since then it works OK if I do not use HP Smart as that still shows offline, the scanner won't work  so I have downloaded Windows own scanner software which works fine. Not really ideal but I can manage.

Thanks

Further update HP now says it is ready so maybe it has done what you said.
