the printer just stop printing jobs. It shows connected via out home network, AirPrint. We haven't changed firmware on computers or the printer. 7740 just stopped receiving print codes. Printer says it's printing and makes a noise that suggests the job is starting then the screen stays stuck on printing. Eventually, the device (iPad, iPhone, laptops) will say job is not printing, do you want to try again or cancel? We even tried connecting directly over USB - no good.
Copies, and internal hardware prints (alignments, etc) print fine and it's clearly connected to our network wirelessly or over ethernet. I think the problem is drivers. NONE of the online solutions or setup apps, HP Smart, HP Easy, etc. None of them work. I'd love if we could get an old school installer package to put printer connection on our computer. The apps aren't fixing the problem. I have business and 4 kids in college and high school. We paid a lot for this printer and wanted to get years of use out of it.
HELP!!!!!!!

Hi @revp,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've already tried a lot of troubleshooting steps for your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740. Since it’s connected and can perform internal prints but isn’t handling print jobs from computers, it's likely an issue with the drivers or software configuration.
Here’s a detailed approach to solving this:
Reinstall Printer Drivers
Since you've had no luck with HP Smart and other apps, manually reinstalling the printer drivers might help.
Download the Printer Drivers:
- Go to the HP Support website.
- Search for “HP OfficeJet Pro 7740”.
- Select the drivers section and download the latest drivers for MacOS.
Remove Existing Printer Drivers:
- Open System Preferences on your Mac.
- Go to Printers & Scanners.
- Select the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 from the list.
- Click the - button to remove it.
Reinstall the Printer:
- After removing the old driver, go back to the Printers & Scanners section.
- Click the + button to add a new printer.
- Your Mac should detect the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740. Select it and follow the prompts to install the new drivers.
Reset Printing System
Resetting the printing system can clear any errors or corrupted settings.
- Reset the Printing System:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) in the Printers list.
- Select Reset printing system.
- Confirm the action and wait for the system to reset.
- Re-add the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 after the reset.
Check Network Settings
Even though your printer is showing as connected, there might be network issues affecting printing.
Restart Devices:
- Restart your printer, router, and the computer you are printing from.

Check IP Address:
- Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel.
- Ensure the IP address is correctly assigned and matches the one used by your devices.
Use an Alternate Connection
You mentioned trying a direct USB connection. Ensure that:
- The USB cable is properly connected and functioning.
- You might also try a different USB port or cable if possible.
These steps should help you get your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 back up and running.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
