My HP7740 was showing "locked by user during setup" in most settings. To reset to factory, First unplug the printer for a few minutes and make sure there is NO Ethernet connected either thru hard wire directly to the printer or thru a USB to a computer or laptop connected to Ethernet. Second, plug the printer back up. The touch screen will immediately power on with out having to push the power button. Once powered on, push and HOLD the power button until screen goes blank. This will take a minute. Once it goes blank note the side panel lights will remain illuminated (ie Home button, question mark button, and back arrow button will remain illuminated.). Once you are at this black screen, release the power button and touch the illuminated HOME button (house symbol). A blue screen will appear on the touch screen panel with different options in all four corners of the screen for different levels of reset either full or partial reset. You will need to touch the TOP right part of the touch panel that says "NEXT" to cycle to full reset. This worked for me and my 7740 is working just like when I took it out of the box. You will have to go thru the setup to input wifi router password and the like. Any questions please ask and I will respond.
