HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer

The HP8610 Print Carriage is stuck on the far right side of the printer, and it's too far in for me to operate the latch and remove the printer head.  Manually moving it does not work, since it is firmly stuck. When I turn on the printer, it says that there a cartridge problem: One ore more cartridges appear to damaged and to remove them and replace them with new cartridges. When I open the door, the carriage does not move to the load position. The screen just says "Door open" like usual, but the printer is not responding at all. The carriage is stuck in place, and I'm not sure how to move it. It's too far away for me to release the latch or take out the ink cartridges, and trying to move it manually does nothing since it is firmly stuck in place. I'm not sure how to fix the carriage.

I have tried turning the printer on and off (including while in operation), disconnecting the power cord and plugging in back into an electric outlet, as well as turning it on and off while letting the power drain. I cannot semi-restart it because I can't even take a cartridge out to access that menu. I also tried pressing on the cartridges while in the tank, but the printer still recognizes them. If anyone has any solutions or insight that would mean a lot, thank you!

@Daniel_L1, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Power Cycle with Manual Movement (Avoiding Force)

You’ve already tried turning it on and off, but let’s try a more controlled power cycle and see if that helps move the carriage.

Turn the printer off (unplug it).

Wait for 10-15 minutes to allow any residual power in the system to dissipate.

Gently try to move the carriage by hand again, but don’t force it. Sometimes the motors get stuck, and with a bit of manual guidance (without forcing), it may loosen.

Plug it back in while still in the powered-off state.

Turn the printer on while gently guiding the carriage. Sometimes, a soft push helps the motor reset.

Look for Obstructions

There could be an obstruction or debris causing the print carriage to stick.

Power off the printer and try to carefully look around the printhead area. Sometimes, paper bits, dust, or other debris might block movement.

If you see anything, try to remove it gently (use a flashlight for better visibility).

Run HP Smart:

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
