The printer will no longer connect to the network, even though the ethernet cable is connected.

We use this printer in a lab at our university. To enable wireless printing for everyone in the lab, we connected the printer to the network via the ethernet cable. When the printer was connected, everyone was able to connect to the printer using the printer IP address. This system worked for months, then suddenly stopped working. I have tried restarting the printer and checked the ethernet connection by removing the cable from the printer and plugging it into a laptop to browse the internet (with the WiFi turned off on the laptop).

Can you guide me through some troubleshooting steps to get the ethernet working again?

The readout on the "Ethernet Details" screen on the printer says:

IP Address: Not Connected

MAC: 5820b15d54bf

Host Name: HP5D54BF

Bonjour Name: HP Officejet Pro 8620 [5D545BF]

Subnet Mask:

Default Gateway:

DNS Server:

Thank you for any help you can give me.

@SThornhill

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer. I read that the printer does not work via ethernet. You have restarted the printer and checked the ethernet connection and the issue persists. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Print a network configuration page from the printer. From the printer control panel display, touch and slide your finger across the screen and then touch Setup.
  • Touch Print Reports and then touch Network Configuration Page.

On the network configuration page, it will mention if the printer's ethernet connection is good or bad. OIf the results are not good then please continue with the below steps:

  • Restore network defaults on the printer:

This should make the printer connect to the network via the ethernet cable.

If the printer still does not connect then I suggest you to perform a reset on the printer. I have sent you a private message with the steps to reset the printer.

I sincerely hope these steps fix the issue. Keep me posted. Good luck!

I have the same problem as the original poster- an HP8620 connected to a nework with ethernet has been working for more than a year suddenly stopped working.

- it does not show up in my router connected hosts

- it shows ethernet 'not connected' on the printer display

I swapped the ethernet connection (both cable and router port) to one I know works- no change.

I followed the suggested resolution- restored network defaults, without success.

Any other suggestions- should I try the printer reset that was suggested?

HP8620 wont connect to wireless router. I have tried restoring the network settings but it still does not work.

It is working with Ethernet connection though.

Its a brand new printer, had it for only few weeks now.

I even checked if there are any new printer drivers or firmware for it, but it is up to date.

I work from home so I need to get this fixed as soon as possible.

Thank you

If it is working through Ethernet there is no need for any wireless connection.  Besides, when the Ethernet LAN cable is connected the wireless is disabled automatically.  Only 1 IP address per device connection.
