Hi @MB-1974,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The 'rd' message usually indicates the printer is in "Ready for Wi-Fi Direct" mode — it's broadcasting a Wi-Fi Direct network so that devices can connect directly to it without using your main Wi-Fi router.

This is not an error. To get out of Wi-Fi Direct mode and connect the printer properly to your Wi-Fi network, follow these steps:

Step 1: Reset Network Settings on the Printer

  1. Power ON the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Cancel () and Wireless (📶) buttons together for 5 seconds.
    • The printer will restart and reset wireless settings.
    • The 'rd' should go away after this.
  3. Wait until the wireless light starts blinking — this means it’s ready to set up.

Step 2: Use HP Smart to Reconnect to Wi-Fi

  1. Download HP Smart (if you haven’t already):
🔗 HP Smart on the App Store
  2. Open HP Smart > Click “Set up a new printer”.
  3. It will detect your HP LaserJet M140w in setup mode (look for the blinking Wi-Fi light).
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to your home Wi-Fi network.

Once done:

  • The Wi-Fi light turns solid blue.
  • 'rd' disappears.
  • You're now fully connected via your router (not just Wi-Fi Direct).

Optional: Disable Wi-Fi Direct (if you don’t need it)

If you want to prevent 'rd' from ever appearing again:

  1. After connecting via HP Smart, access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Type the printer’s IP address (found via HP Smart) in Safari.
  2. Go to Networking > Wi-Fi Direct Settings.
  3. Set Wi-Fi Direct to Off or Manual.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you for your reply. Sadly this does not help. However long I press the cancel and wifi button the rd continues to blink and HP Smart does not find the printer......

Any other ideas?

Many thanks,

Mark
