My HP Officejet Pro 8610 stopped service after printing one side of the page during a duplex print job. The display gives the false message “paper jam”. False because there is no paper jam. I checked via the front opening to the printer head compartment, the duplex tool at the rear, the paper tray, but there is nowhere any sign of paper nor paper debris. I also did a few hard resets, with no result. On the internet I read that a false message can also be caused by a dirty or defective sensor. The waste ink reservoir is very dirty and covered with clumpy waste ink, so the obvious cause lies here somewhere. I removed the right side panel of the printer to get better access and started cleaning, so far without result. My question to the community is twofold :

  • Where are the sensors in this area located ?
  • Can I remove the waste ink reservoir and put it back afterwards ? How to do so ?

Hi @Michel152,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 is displaying a "paper jam" error when there isn't an actual jam, there are several steps you can take to try and resolve the issue.

Check All Possible Jam Locations:

  • Inspect the following areas for any small bits of paper or debris:
    • Input and output trays
    • Inside the printer through the front access door
    • The duplex mechanism at the rear
  • Use a flashlight to make sure you don’t miss any small pieces of paper.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about one minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Make sure there are no obstructions inside the printer that could be triggering the sensor. Even small pieces of debris can cause the false jam error.

Run a Printer Diagnostic:

  • Use your printer’s diagnostic tools if available, often accessible through the printer’s software on your computer or from the control panel on the printer.

Check Sensor:

  • Sometimes, the sensors that detect if paper is moving can get blocked or dirty. Carefully clean the sensors with a dry, soft cloth.

Avoid Front Paper Removal:

  • If you are trying to manually clear the paper jam error, try to remove paper from the back of the printer or from the paper path by following any indicated instructions on the printer’s display or guidebook. Avoid removing paper from the front to prevent any further issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your reply.

Oeps I have set you all on the wrong foot in the title. The title should obviously be : How can I remove the waste ink reservoir of my HP Office 8610 AIO ? as it was correctly phrased in the text.

I repeat the twofold question to the community :

(1) where are the paper jam sensors located in the area around the waste ink tank ?

(2)  can I remove the waste ink take to clean it more thoroughly and put it back afterwards, knowing that I'm not a technician ? How to do so ?

Hi @Michel152,

Thank you for clarifying your question

Location of the Paper Jam Sensors near the Waste Ink Area

  • In the Officejet Pro 8610, the paper jam detection system consists of several optical sensors located along the paper path:
  • Input tray sensor: near the paper feed rollers.
  • Carriage path sensors: under the carriage area (beneath the ink carriage assembly).
  • Output and duplex sensors: near the rear access and duplexer area.
  • Around the waste ink reservoir (service station / purge assembly), there is usually one optical sensor that detects paper or debris near the service station cap or wiper area.

Note: This area is not easily accessible without partially disassembling the printer. HP does not recommend trying to clean or move these sensors manually, as they are small and delicate.

Removing and Cleaning the Waste Ink Reservoir

  • The waste ink reservoir (also called the service station, spittoon, or purge unit) collects excess ink during cleaning cycles.
  • Unfortunately:
  • HP does not provide a user-serviceable method to remove or clean the waste ink tank.
  • The part is sealed within the chassis and integrated with the printer’s internal mechanism.
  • Removing it requires partial disassembly of the printer, including carriage rail removal and access to the main frame, which can cause alignment issues or ink leakage if not done properly.

Safe Cleaning Alternatives

  • If you’re not a technician, here’s what you can safely do:
  • Unplug the printer and open the access door.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to wipe any visible ink buildup around the service station area (the far right side where the printhead parks).
  • Avoid touching the carriage belt, sensors, or ink tubing.
  • Allow the area to dry completely before turning the printer back on.

If the waste ink reservoir is overflowing or clogged, the best option is to:

  • Replacement part name: HP Officejet Pro 8610 Service Station Assembly (HP Part No. CN577-67025).
  • You can check availability via HP’s official parts distributor here:

HP Parts Store – Service Station CN577-67025

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for the explanation.

Unfortunately

- the Service Station CN577-67025 is no longer available in the HP Parts store

- I did some cleaning of alleged (?) sensors, but in vain.

So I'll have to say goodbye to my good old printer, but at least I gave it a try.

Rgds
