I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 9018 and just pulled out the flash drive last time. Now every time I use that flash drive it says it is damaged. I am assuming because the light never turned off when I pulled it out before. So I think doing a system shut down is the only safe way to eject it unless you have built something in.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

 

You can safely remove a USB flash drive only when the USB port light is not blinking. Do not remove the flash drive from the printer USB port while it is being accessed by the printer. This can damage the files on the USB flash drive.

 

NOTE: The printer does not support encrypted USB flash drives.
